Thread: Brake fluid

    Default Brake fluid

So haven't been at the car for a while but need it out of the garage. And still have this problem:
Car had been sitting for ten years aprox.
I changed fuel pump, gas tank, water pump. Ignition oil etc...
when the engine finally ran I tried the transmission while holding the brakes. As soon as it tried to move the brake pedal went to the floor.
I looked in the master cylinder which I checked before and fluid was gone.
So added some fluid and had another attempt. Again no brakes.
So I changed master cylinder (no leak but thought it failed internal.)
Bench bled it and was ok. Installed in the car it seemed like dropping level each time I press the brake pedal. I filled in about 1 liter and wanted to know how much an empty system would hold.
I have the rear bleeder open but no fluid coming out. Checked everywhere but no holes nor leak can be found.
    Any hidden spots?

Car is an 81 fairmont wagon.

The early fox mustangs have the rear brake line running through the inside. Your fairmont could be the same... possibly leaking inside. Might want to lift up the rear carpet and have a look... possibly under the rear seat... passenger side.

Had a look and indeed on the passenger side under the rear seat there is a brake line running. Rusted so badly I could break a part from in between...

I've heard of that happening. I guess I've been lucky, so far. On my older foxes, I've never had issues with this stretch of tubing. Glad you found it, though.

Replaced that line section in my car 6/2003.
Rusted out and failed where it exits the floor pan in the rear axle area.
At the inside to outside transition point.

Inline Tube bent a new one. I went with SS. One piece.
Has the protective spring sections like oem.
Old one was used as the template.
15 years, still looks like brand new.

Took 4 hours to install, according to my records. Car has no a/c.
Hardest part was fishing the front end part behind the HVAC thru the firewall.
    Without damaging the bends.
Had vinyl vacuum caps on both ends to keep out debris, dirt.
