Thread: Egr valves

    Default Egr valves

If you need to change out your EGR valve, are they all the same? I mean, if it fits, will it work correctly?
When I hook up the vacuum pump, mine failed to open. I have another one from the same motor, only a different emissions diagram and parts.
They do not look exactly the same, and the valve opening is only a pin point on one. But the chambers are the same in size and it fits.
The parts store only shows one for that size engine across all years.
Have to get it smog checked on Monday. Hate to fail because I have a part that does not function correctly.

Is the vacuum diaphragm shot? There is nothing in the egr that can't be fixed by a good cleaning so if the diaphragm is good I would just clean it instead.

It is clean. I learned 25 years ago that one of the fastest ways to fail the smog test is to have dirty EGR passages.
I remove and clean it every time it is up for smog testing. That is why I removed and tested it.
The plunger works by hand, but will not hold a vacuum or pull when vacuum is applied. The spare does.

If its not EEC, they are all the similar BUT NOT EXACTLY the same single-diaphragm EGR valves.

    They have

    1. different HG crack off ratings on a silver decal with a blue shade. Like 175, 135 etc.

    2. The pintle position differs...for instance, with the generic Motorcraft-CX-1223, its just the outlet that is clocked or phased differently.

I6's are in line with the two bolts, the V8's, it varies, normally its at right angles, but it can we swung around.

In its favour, it comes with calibration washers, and its totally adjustable.

The latter 1983-1985 Tomco 10420 EGR valve, it has lots of differences, and its modulated electronically by the PFE sensor on its base.

Then there are other types too that you can clock differently.

After the advent of the EEC, the EGR was electronically controlled, and had an extra control system. The external back pressure transducers was fiited directly to 83-85 EGR valves, but others used the older single-diaphragm EGR with a between the EGR valve and carb spacer.
