Default 85 to 140 face change question

lets say you did the 140 overlay onto your 85 speedo,
Could you calibrate the speedo by changing out the speedo gears in the transmission?
like going from a 18 tooth to a 23 tooth for example? or 23 to 18

Would that work? it would be a lot easier than getting the speedo recalibrated.
Has anyone done it that way?

    You have two choices:

    1. re-calibrate the speedometer; OR
    2. use a 'ratio adapter'

I don't know if #2 is even available for the Foxes.

Or you could buy a repainted one without having to worry about bubbles from the overlay.

    Hadn't seen those before.

But $25 for the 2-minute job of changing the odometer reading?

Don't have to pay it, do it yourself.

Lets say you even COULD mess with needle drive rate at the transmission and make it so ~105 on an 85 MPH calibrated needle with a 140 sticker under it reads somewhat close to 140. Now the odometer will be off vastly.

If you do some searching you can also find a BBK speedometer that puts 170 at 3:00. Now you can go past 200 without worrying about twisting the cable off. Perfect for your 5 second 1/4 mile car or your standing mile car.

Four eyed Saleens and worthy clones have this speedomter calibration with a Saleen 170 overlay.

So if I get the ford version or the asc one it is plug in and accurate?

FWIW, I have seen the Fox Resto speedos from development on. I live where they are. They are REALLY nice looking. Nobody would ever know it was not an OEM 140 speedo. It's a converted 85 MPH unit. That's why they want your old one back.
