    Default Cross Reference

Back in the day before computers, all junk yards had cross reference books.
    Dose anyone still print these?

Favorite thing I’ve said that’s been requoted: “"40 year old beercan on wheels with too much motor"

    My four eyed foxes:
"Trigger" - 86 Mustang GT - Black with red interior. 5.0 T5 built as Z. Original motor ~1/2 million miles. 18 yr daily, 10 a toy
"Silver" - 85 Mustang Saleen 1985-006? (Lol) Rare 1E silver GT / charcoal interior. The car is a little bit of a mystery. Current project bought as a roller, tons of Saleen / Racecraft pedigree

Also in the stable - my son’s car. 1986 Mustang GT Convertible. Black/Black/Black conversion. 93 leather. VM1 ECU. T5Z

    past foxes -
1989 Mustang LX Sport 5.0 AOD white/tan black top. Once I ran this one down I caught a wife.
Wife also had a 1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe in the 90's.

Default part interchange resources old and new

I used books/catalogs/microfiche when in the dealer and auto parts business back late 70's early 80's.
Equal to or faster, more flexible, than computer databases after practice, especially in special situations.
Some stores still use them as backups.
Disadvantage was multiple customers, limited sets of books. Had to share same book or wait sometimes.
Featured cross references, interchange, app sections. Stores cannot and wont do this now.
Takes too long, even if possible from what i see, doing this online with basically the same access to databases.
Home access does allow homework and access to specs and data for possible interchanges.
And much wider info as to where parts can be found and purchased, saving time and money.
Forums can help too. They may share others doing, or have done, the like.

Just looked up some trim parts for a 90 Chevy Beretta today. Parts are long out of production.
Did find out those parts were used on all years of the car.
Was a GM wholesale parts site. GM p/n, exploded pics, interchange years.
Then searched a local yard's inventory. Found one with a 94. Going to check it out this weekend.

Rock Auto, AutoZone, O'Reilly, have something like interchange as to what other vehicles a part fits.
Other sites vary as to how extensively they do this.

There are electronic versions of that book. OCRed indexed. I saw it at a now defunct junk yard in NE Nebraska back in 96. They had it on CDROM. Would LOVE to have that disc!
