    Default 4180 rebuild

Will start my 4180 rebuild soon. I have dontnit a long time back. I have the shop manuals for my 85 GT. I was looking at rebuild kits, but notice they don’t come with new floats. Is that a must, since the card is 33 years old and does the kit include everything or are there accessories to buy?
    thanks

The floats are typically okay. It probably just needs to be taken apart, cleaned, and put back together with a fresh gasket set. You might do a little research relative to jetting, power valve, back plate, squirter, etc.

2nd that. I've rebuilt a number of Holley carbs without need of replacing floats.

Just rebuilt a 4180 I got off ebay. Here is a thread I recently started talking about cleaning agents and ultrasonic cleaners: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...-dual-stage-PV. Additionally, the 2-stage power valves are not made anymore, so the replacement is a single stage. We talk about what to use for that. Also, I noticed a nice improvement going from the stock 62 close-metered jets to size 64 jets. I don't feel the secondaries kick in anymore, which is good.

Use a Holley rebuild kit 3-1346. About $50-60 depending where you get it from. The kits have everything you need in them.

What about the replacement jets? Have to buy those separately?

Yeah they are like $5-10 I think. The floats will be fine. Keep the needle check valve that is under the accelerator pump squirter. The rebuild kit gives you a check ball, but keep that as a spare and just clean and reuse the needle. Supposedly the extra weight of the needle is better in there.

Don't mess with any of the screws like the secondary throttle stop screw or the choke stuff if your car as been running good. The Holley instructions say something ridiculous like to turn the secondary stop screw in 3-4 turns. Don't do that, because your car will idle at like 1000 rpm.

If you have any questions during the rebuild just post them up.
