Hey, just wanted to get some advice on upgrading my 4180 to a newer 4150 or perhaps an Edelbrock 4106. Has anyone done this swap and if so, how was your experience?

I just put the Edelbrock on my 85. The biggest problem is that the coil needs adjusted forward to clear but not an issue and the fuel hook up is tight. I have the plastic fuel filter laying in front of the carb laying on the intake. I'm going to change that to a better metal filter.
The throttle cable hooks right up but the carb is closer and compresses the return spring on the cable making the gas pedal feel funny. It works fine though but I may change the throttle cable bracket.
Here are some of my previous posts on the Summit vac secondary carb. Excellent carb!

Does that replacement fit with the original air filter housing?

Why swap it? Unless your car is heavily modded, the 4180 works great. Put the money into something else. If it's not running good, probably just needs a bit of an overhaul. $60 for a kit from Holley.

Okay, so I decided to take the advice of the 4180 proponents and keep the 4180. I got her rebuilt and upon reinstalling, one corner of the baseplate broke, can this be JB welded?

Ouch... as base breaks go, through the accelerator pump stud is the equivalent of the windows "blue screen of death". Since it is what it is, and bases for 4180's are pretty scarce, and since you have the broke off piece, I'd be inclined to V the outers of the break some with a file for roughening up and for some area for epoxy to reside, and yes, jb weld... but also since it's the area it is, incorporate about a 1/8" drilling and a pin through the piece beside and perpendicular to the mounting stud hole and into the base plate, and then epoxy altogether (with none on the underside, the intake manifold flange face), positioned properly and let cure adequately... and then be extra super careful installing next time. The attaching nuts don't need to be anything more than snug, and criss-cross evenly snugged down. Otherwise, search for another base plate. I've been looking, even at truck 4180 alternatives to use etc, and they just aren't real plentiful... Good luck with it.

It can be Tig welded with someone who is good with one.
Hey thanks guys, really appreciate the advice. I’ll let you know how it goes.
