I haven't had a lot of time to work on the '86 hatchback since the last video. Cleaning the engine and transmission up has taken a turn for the worse after causing problems for myself and finding "repairs" from past owners or mechanics. It's been an uphill battle, but I think (more like hope) that the worst is about over and I can get back to cleaning vs. repairing.

It feels like forever that I've done something significant on the '86 restoration or restomod. At the end of February I found that I was goi ng to have to add a helicoil to the block for the timing cover. Since then it's been slow progress to get the engine repaired, cleaned, and reassembled. But I'm finally done. The question is which section I move to next. I think I'll stay with the engine bay cleaning until I can get the car back running completely before moving to the vinyl wrap.

This week I managed to get the front suspension out of the '86. 30 years of oil and grease kept the bolts lubricated enough to come out pretty easy. Now to get it all cleaned up, and put back in the car son.

I've been slowly putting the '86 hatchback back together again. I thought I'd be able to hear it roar to life by this weekend, but too many other projects took priority. I did get the engine and transmission back in, plus a few other bits and pieces. Next time I'll have it ready to start up and make some noise.

As promised, the '86 is back in business. I had to adjust the timing on the engine to get it to fire up, but it turned right over and fired up. It's run a couple times up to temperature to make sure everything works and there are no leaks from the areas that leaked previously. The '86 is back, and now that it's on tires again I can take it in and out of the garage to do the bodywork without making a huge mess inside the garage.

I've decided to let the car go to a new owner. Asking $3,500 OBO. I'll put a post into the classifieds section also. Just an FYI. If it's not sold in the next month or so, I'll just put it into storage for the winter months and bring it back out next year when I have more time to tinker with it.

I haven't had a lot of time in the last month to work on the '86. Maybe a couple hours in an afternoon, and a couple days every week. but I have made some progress. I need about 1 more hour of work to finish up all the surface rust removal. At that point, I'll start to work on a little filler to even out the panel surfaces before working on smoothing everything for the vinyl wrap.

I've been working on my 82 GT on and off for 7-8 years now. It runs and drives but still needs the small things fixed or replaced. Hang in there, it will be worth it.

The weather has turned colder, and standing outside to sand isn't very fun. I decided to build a simple sanding booth inside the garage to somewhat contain all the dust, and could also allow some painting inside the garage without too much of a mess.

I have been able to do a little work on the '86 hatchback and had it done with the primer. We had an event in the garage last weekend and a little girl fell into the sanding booth knocking a fender off the sawhorse. It put a dent in one of the fenders, so it will need more metal work at minimum. Once done (again), I can move of to paint the trim on the car and fenders before sanding the body.

I have been able to spend a little more time working on the '86 lately. After completing the primer, the next part of the restoration was to repaint the body molding. The molding on the car is still adhered very well, so there's no need to remove it before paint. It takes a little time to tape around each piece of molding, but the results are outstanding after paint. I'm using SEM #39153 Charcoal GRAY and the color is great for the car. I plan to do a lot of the car with the color.

This week I have done a lot of vinyl wrapping already. I was able to get started last weekend and have half of the main body already done. Both quarters, the rood, the taillight panel, and the hatch are done as of this afternoon. I'll have a future video out on all of the work. I'm happy with the work so far, although I'm finding some touch-ups will be needed later on.

Here's a video explaining how the process is starting and how the garage is laid out to complete the job. Nothing fancy, but for those wanting to try their hand at wrapping, it can help lay everything out.

I was able to finish up the main part of the wrap on the '86 two days ago and pull it outside in the sunlight. The sunlight shows all the little things that can hide in the darkness of garage lights. Overall I'm happy with the wrap. Not perfect, but for a car that was left to die a slow death in a field, I think it's a big step in the right direction. Many hours to go to have back to fully assembled...

Finally back to working on the '86 Mustang interior a little bit. I have most of the front area complete, and now starting on the sail panels.

I have been working on the '86 as I have had time. I bought another car that needed some attention also over the winter. Here is some progress on the '86 and I'm currently putting the interior back in the car after wiping it out with soapy water. New carpets going in, etc.

I've been spending a few hours a day over the last couple of weeks trying to get the '86 interior done. I've cleaned the interior out, added new carpet (both main area and hatchback), and hopefully will get the seats put back in this weekend. I used my upholstery cleaner on them on Wednesday, and they look nice and blue again.

Just waiting on a couple small pieces from LMR to finish the interior, but new inner weatherstrips were added to the OE '86 panels. On to finish up the exterior trim pieces and wrap next.
