Default I Pulled a 1986 Hatchback Out of a Field

A couple weeks ago my brother-in-law send me a screen shot of an ad on an obscure Facebook group. It literally says, "1986 Mustang. No title. Good parts or demolition car. $500". So we hooked up a trailer and snatched it out of the field.

Very cool....not a GT thought And definitely need that winch, or at least a few more sets of legs that can push it up the trailer. I've resurrected a few of them now that have sat without running for 15 years or more...its a very rewarding feeling for sure!

True. I also say it's a 3.3L in the beginning and later a 3.8L. It will be a fun project.

So I've been thinking on what to do with this car. I've got the title being processed, so I will own it officially. if you watched the video it was up in the air on the title issue. That's taken care of. I've decided that I am not going to keep the car because I have my widebody that is the keeper car for the garage. I have started to put together a budget for a Thunderbird Super Coupe drivetrain swap, a repaint in original color, and then to restore the rest of the car and upgrade where needed. I don't want to really lose money on it, but I'm not looking to make a profit either.

I talked to a local paint shop that quoted about $3,700 for spraying the car if I prepped the body work and brought it roughly close to spray. They'll double check everything and the spray the jams and the car in the original ford color. That seems a little high, but I have't shopped around either. Their shop rate is $58/hour.

I budgeted about $1,500 for a Super Coupe off Craigslist that I can take the engine and trans from, get an 8.8" from somewhere, redo the weatherstripping, some trim repainting, etc. Parts are about $1,500 because I plan on adding a set of 17" Pony wheels.

What do you think of the idea? Budget is about $7,500 - $8k right now and I am doubtful I can get that back out of the car. It makes me hesitent to build the car and want to just sell it now to get out of the hassle.

I agree with you...doubtful you will get $8k out of it when you are done, unless you find a buyer that really wants a Fox Mustang with a T-bird Super Coupe power plant. I wouldn't go that far with it if your goal is to sell it soon. If that is the case, just clean it up as is and sell it now....I think you'll make more profit that way. Plus I'm sure there are WAY more buyers out there that want to do their own engine swap, than pay a premium for somebody else's work.

It's been a while since I updated everyone on where the '86 hatchback is. I put it in the garage a couple months ago to start the restoration. I decided against the drivetrain change and am just going to clean it up inside and outside before selling it. I currently have the dash pulled to change the heater core, then I'll move on to carpet, seats, and other interior pieces that need to be done. I am going to clean up the surface rust on the exterior and vinyl wrap it before selling it. I recently changed the hatch struts to get rid of the 2x4 the previous owner was using. I will work on the fuel system next, then heater core, and so on. The goal is to have it ready for sale by the end of June.

Here is the video for the hatchback gas struts.

The gas tank is out right now waiting for a new filler neck seal to come in. I have replaced the fuel filter and inspected the sender and pump inside the tank. Both are in good condition, so I'll just put it all back together this weekend and add some fresh gas with stabilizer. It should start right back up.

When I took the gas tank out, one thing I noticed was that the connections to the filter weren't on all the way. Remember I got this car with the info that it was serviced and then it died? I'm wondering if this it why. The tank was in really good condition, so I just replaced the filler grommet and cleaned it up before putting it back in the car.

I've been slowly working on the '86 hatchback piece by piece. I rerplaced the door weatherstrip seals, the hatchback seal, and finished up the new heatercore last night. The old one was starting to seep a little bit, so it was definitely time to get it replaced. I took the tape deck out while I was putting the dash back in and noticed that whoever put the tape deck in (I assume in the late 1980's) used a jumper harness. They didn't cut the wires! Yay!

Next on my list of things to replace were the door and hatchback seals. An easy job that makes a huge difference.

Another small thing off the list os the heater core. Not too bad to change, and definitely time to do it. The core had a small weep coming from it, so it was going to give up eventually.

I'll probably redo the headliner next to get it out of the way.

It rained all weekend, so I spent a few hours in the garage both days working on the '80 widebody and the '86 hatchback. The '80 is pretty much ready for the driving season starting at the end of the month. Once it was done, I spent time cleaning up the garage and getting storage ready for the '86 parts that were about to overtake any extra space I had available.

I have taken all the interior out of the '86 rear of the dash. No major surprises, and the car is cleaner than I thought it would be. A handful of surface rust spots around grommets in the floor, but nothing too bad. The headliner will need recovered, all carpet replaced, and then just a thorough cleaning. I did find two build sheets for the car. Sadly one was stuck to the floor and no salvageable, but one was still in good shape. I'll keep it as a momento for the new owner.

The last thing I did was remove the rear taillights. The driver's housing and lens were both broken. The passenger side just needs a new lens. They were so badly repaired by a previous owner that it's really impressive. I can only imagine how long it took to fix the lenses at some point. I'm guessing around 2007 as a piece of calendar was used a filler inside the passenger housing.

I had a chance to take the taillights off the '86 and really give them a good once over. A previous owner really did a number trying to repair them after they were broken.

I trailered the '86 hatchback into town today to get a new windshield installed. I didn't want to put a new headliner in, or the new wrap on, and then have the windshield company mess with either. Butyl is bad enough on its own. The car starts up like it should for an original '86 and has enough torque to drive right up the trailer ramps with ease. A year ago it took an hour with a come-along to get it on the trailer. Yesterday I felt like I had to reign it back from taking off on me. It's going to be a fun little car eventually.

I'm finally getting back to the '86 hatchback project. I've taken off the rear spoiler, the hood, front wheels, and the driver side wheel well liner up to this point. The engine leaks enough oil and coolant that I am going to pull the whole front end of the car apart, reseal the engine, and clean the front half of the car. I don't want to sell a greasy mess that leaks all over the place. It needs to run as well and it looks.

This looks like a fun project, and a heck of a deal on that car. Looks like you're well on the way of making it into a solid daily driver for someone without having a fortune in it. Good luck.

That is my goal. Something reliable enough that another person could buy and drive while they decide how to make it their car. There won't be much needed on the interior or exterior. The next owner can decide if they want to swap out the drivetrain for a V8 or something else. It would be a decent starter car with the V6.

I had been dreading pulling the engine and transmission, but finally got to it about a week ago. No drama getting it out, but it's going to need a deep cleaning to get back to a good starting point. The great thing about an oil leak is that it prevents rust from starting...

I have been debating keeping this car, but decided over the last two days that I wanted to build something different next. So to fund that starting point, this one will be for sale once it's done to my satisfaction.
