That last shot; I don't recall ever seeing a rear wiper, didn't know it was an option.

Car started idling rough again. Found another broken vacuum line. It was an elbow right behind the alternator at the front of the passenger side valve cover.

More on the rough idle; vacuum modulator diaphragm failed, creating another vacuum leak. I wondered where my trans fluid was going? (no leak). Side note: parts stores do not stock these anymore. Had to order it.

The weather was decent today. Got the vacuum modulator installed. The new one has an adjustment screw, the old one didn't. I left it alone(the screw), it drives fine. There's a small rod that inserts into the modulator, it fell out when I took out the old one. It inserted the same into the new modulator, so I didn't adjust it.

Just replaced the second battery in this car, this year. Couldn't find the correct size battery the first 2 times, so got a similar size, slightly wider(3/4"?). Both times it slid further back in the tray while driving and the alternator fan bit into it. First time, Advance auto replaced it for free, this time it's on me. But this time I did finally find the correct size so it won't happen again. It's not an issue in the Fairmont with the 5.0, the alternator is nowhere near close to the battery. Just in this car with the 3.8.

Yeah the battery is a bit close to the alt fan. Damn 3.8s lol. Can't wait to v8 swap it

Update on the battery vs. alternator situation: The acid burned a hole in the top of the vapor canister creating a large vacuum leak . I noticed that my air conditioning would keep switching from vent to defrost whenever I pressed the accelerator. It was working previous to this so I searched for a leak and found the hole in the canister.

Another thread I started because of a fuel pump issue I had with the wagon: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...-pump-question

This car had air shocks on it when I bought it. It also sagged in the rear, I believe the previous owner installed them in an attempt to correct that. I replaced the coil springs a while ago which helped the sag situation, but the ride still felt extremely soft. Yesterday I removed the air shocks and installed conventional shocks. I also installed Air-Lift bags inside the springs. They don't affect ride height, but they do make the ride firmer without being harsh. I also intend to tow a small fishing boat trailer and I wanted a little more capacity for that.

The car(engine) developed a maddening squeak/chirp noise in the last few months. Could not locate the source. Changed the tensioner pulley, no dice. Had a spare alternator, so I swapped it in. Nope. Water pump is new(er). PS pump is new(er). So I just watched it while running and i noticed the PS pulley is slightly mis-aligned with the other pulleys, causing the belt to rub on the inner edge of the water pump pulley. Like the ps pulley was installed too far (by me). So I used my puller to move the pulley out a bit and now the belt rides right in the center of the water pump pulley. No more squeak/chirp. Didn't realize the PS pulley could be installed too far.

Time for new brakes and struts. '87+ upgrade for the brakes, Tokiko blues for the struts. I gotta get on a more regular inspection schedule. This could've been bad, I got lucky.

BTW, the brakes were working fine, but that hose could have popped at any time.

Toe is way off with the new spindles. Def gonna have to adjust on it to make it drivable. Then to a shop for an accurate alignment.

edit: I did a driveway string style calibration(lol) on the toe issue. I must have got pretty close, drives much better.

Got the alignment done at the shop. Drives really nice now. Also, I installed new rear shocks. Passenger side was blown out, as was the pass side front strut. So glad all this is done. But I noticed the tailpipe is rotted where it comes out of the muffler. Never ends.
