Default Steam_mills drone fix really works!

I had a terrible 1800 rpm drone. Following steam_mills suggestion, I went and bought the metal lath today, cut 2 8x12 inch pieces out of it, wound them around a broomstick and slid them as seen in the picture.

The nearly intolerable drone from my not really mufflers is gone.

What holds them in? How does it sound at idle?

I was going to replace my mufflers. Maybe I'll try this first. Where did you get the metal lath?

No change in sound that I can detect. I will post a recording later.

If you make it a little too big it will actually hold itself in the exhaust pretty well. When I tested it I drove around with out it coming out. After I verified it worked I put a small 1inch screw in the exhaust right near the hangar to make sure it doesn't come out.

I got the lath at a building supply store. Apparently it goes behind out door tile/faux rock or brick. 7 dollars for a 4 by 8 foot sheet.

Here is a recording of the exhaust sound. Idle in gear 550 in park 800.

This looks to be a good, quick fix. It put a dual 2.5" Flowmaster exhaust on our 2.8 V6 and have what I feel is a drone around 3000 rpm due to being a little too big. I had planned on making a restrictive orifice to put into the furthest rearward flange to provide a little more back pressure and slow the gasses down. This looks to be a really easy, quick solution.

Thanks for sharing, I may now give this a try

I tried it without the screw. I was good for about 2 drives before I lost one.

I have had these in my car for a good 4 years. No issues. I read about this on a rat rod site.

I would have to assume they get better at their job as carbon and schmuck build up.

    DIY basic resonator tip.
Resourcefulness, cleverness, are a couple spices of life.
Drywall mesh. Good for body rust hole work too, as is metal gutter leaf guard.

Beats spending 50+ on tuning cones.
SS screws as mesh retainers wont rust.
Layer of steel wool can be wrapped around the mesh like a bagel dog.

The early SVO dual sport tip exhaust assys had perf res tubes in them.
Reduced the 2.25" tip to 2" hole.
    (2.25"-2") /2= 1/8" thick bun.

Tried the fix and it got rid of about 80% of the drone. Not sure if I have the placement correct but 80% isn't too bad.

That is about what I would call my reduction too. Not entirely gone but no longer annoying.

You said you used an 8"x12" piece. When rolled is it 8" long or 12" long?

8" I am never to accurate with this.

Also, for those of you still with drone, try different sizes in each pipe. I think I have and 8x12 in one and 6 x 14 in the other.

This disturbs the resonance - that is why you perceive the drone.

Yeah sounds good I'm going to experiment with this as well.

Doing some research a while back I believe the original stock dual exhaust on these cars also had a slightly smaller muffler on the passenger side. I assume to disturb the resonance issues as well.

If you would like to read up more on eliminating the drone. Science type stuff, not cramming things up your tailpipe. More involved though.

As an aside, I have found that getting rid of drone was as easy as getting different mufflers.

Yeah, if I had real mufflers I wouldn't have drone issues...

Just modded to make them very unequal length. Definitely improved, now it is just loud, but not droning...
