Default Ziebart coating removal engine bay

My 86 Capri was treated to the Ziebart service which did the job over the past 32 years. Part of the service was to cover the inside of the engine bay with some kind of undercoating, so it looks pretty bad. However, I want to clean up my engine bay and was wondering if anyone had luck removing the undercoating without damaging the paint underneath?

I was thinking about using PB Blaster to try to get under it and then a plastic scraper to scrape it off.

    Any advice?

I've heard that a high pressure washer using hot water can blast it off without damage to the paint.

Chemically you could try this stuff.....? https://www.sherwin-williams.com/hom...og/peel-away-7

If youre careful enough a propane torch will soften it and scrape it off as you go. I did the whole underside of a car that way. Then I used lacquer thinner to clean it the rest of the way. It cleaned up fairly easy leaving the factory red oxide primer in tact. Not a fast way but very thorough

Thanks for the suggestions! I spent some time on it this weekend and found that 'Goof-off' spray with a stiff nylon brush did a pretty good job on it. The coating on the fender itself where it bolts under the hood came off pretty easily, but the stuff on the inside of the engine bay was a lot more difficult. I let the Goof off sit on the thick stuff for a while and it loosened it up, but I had to scrape a lot of it off before I could really get the goof-off to work.

I used a plastic scraper for the thick stuff and it worked pretty well. I waxed the areas that I had cleaned up to make sure I sealed the paint.

I read on another forum that someone suggested denatured mineral spirits. I'm going to try that, too..

I'll try the heat gun tonight on the really tough stuff. I have a LONG way to go!

I believe one of the members here (Bob) removed the undercoating from his entire car.

WD-40 and a plastic scraper and brushes. One of my friends (and member here) removed the sludge from a ~2k mile '86 GT last year and swears by it. A friend of mine also removed the sludge this way from the '92 Calypso LX I sold him late last year.

Yeah...that will make you think twice before using mayonnaise on your next ham & cheese over Miracle Whip

    Yuck!!

OK, so now I'm going to have to try mayo. Any particular brand work any better? You know, down in the South, we use Dukes. All others are just uncivilized.

Had the same undercoating on my 83 TBird. Decided to degrease and low pressure wash the engine bay many years back and after letting the foaming engine degreaser soak for awhile, when I washed it off, some of the undercoating came off too! Might want to give that a try too.

I've also had luck with WD40. Removing undercoating, not on sandwiches.
