Default Glovebox latch for a 84

Hey guys, I need to replace the latch for my glovebox in my 84gt. Is there a genric one that can be bought new or do I have to pull one out of a donor car? If so what years?

    Thanks

I see that lmr have lock sets that include glove box lock but they are 87-93. Will these work with 84? I assume they would because they are just a lock but I'd like to know before ordering

Thanks man, would you mind taking a pic of the inside of the latch and the part it latches to in the glove box of your 84? That way I can see what mine is missing.

Latch for an 84 is different than the 87-93. Look for an NOS one. I’ve seen fox Resto had a few.

Thanks, I'm not even sure mine is broken as I cant see if I'm missing anything. The lock looks like it's fine and I have the bar that's in the glove box. If someone who has a 84- to 86 could post a pic of their glove box open so I could see if I'm missing something that would be awesome.

Thanks for the pics dagenham. Ya I definitely missing the main piece. This is all I have lol. Looks like I'm missing the big piece that goes around the key lock and latches to the bar.

Now to find a complete lock. Put a WTB in the classified section of the forum.

I found this tonight while perusing Ebay. From the sounds of it, exactly what you need.

Ok so I recieved the latch and got it installed in my glove box. Only problem now is do I just shove the lock cylinder into the latch? I'm a little scared to do that just in case it does not work then I've got bigger problems with my box being latched and no way to get it open. I dont even know if the key is the right one or not. I tried removing latch but now it wont come out. Hmm what to do??Attachment 121662

Put the key in the cylinder and see if the tumblers line up. I have not looked at one in a while but it should allow the housing to spin. All of this is done before installing it. A lock smith can make a key if needed.

Ya, I'm pretty sure its not the right key. Not sure what the previous 2 owners did but if I have to get a new key made then that makes 4 keys for everything on the car lol. Can a guy put the lock cylinder in and still be able to turn and open glove box as long as its not locked?

A locksmith should be able to set the glove box to your current key. They (or you) just have to change the pins.
