Has anybody done the 4.6 swap into a 86, is it hard to do and is it worth the effort. any web sites out there to get some info?

I wouldn't bother for a single overhead cam motor. 3v or 4v sure if the price is right. I haven't done it but looked into it. A factory SN-95 K-member and mounts, and it should bolt in. Using factory fox control arms will help limit how much wider the front track width will grow. You might have to ask around to find out which headers fit best.

Even the 99 PI motor’s were way down on torque vs the 5.0. You could grab a 1999-2004 and make it more or less a bolt in on some fronts, but it’s cheaper to add heads and intake to a SBF.
Depends upon what you want.
Even with 3.73:1 rear gears in the 99GT my cousin bought new my 86GT at 250K miles would flat out blow the doors off of the car. No contest at all. Well beyond gapped him in a 1/4 mile. Left him basically sitting there top end.
The 4.6 has potential. Look at the terminators. But they require a serious effort and $$$$
to each their own.
I think it depends on what you want to do with the car overall.
I am not a fan of the basic 4.6. Too small and not enough power. Now if you are talking the Terminator 4.6 DOHC Supercharged then I am IN! The Mach 1 4.6 DOHC and the 96-98, 99-01 Cobras are 300 HP and fun engines, but honestly you can make that much power easily with a good SBF.
There are parts and pieces out there to make the swap easier. The Terminator engine is much more expensive option, but if you have nothing right now IIRC, then the costs might not be that bad comparatively If you shop around the Terminator motors have come down a bit in price thanks to the Coyote 5.0 Which is another great option and much better than any standard 4.6 if you consider the swap.
If you are doing a budget build, then honestly a SBF will be cheaper and much easier. The 4.6/5.0 will require either a Hydroboost or manual brake setup, unique headers or stock manifolds, K member swap or modifications, Mod transmission, unique H/X pipe, wiring and computer parts, and many other misc parts. I am doing the 5.4 DOHC swap in my 82 GT which is even more of a headache due to the taller deck height of the 5.4 so I can tell you about some of the issues. I have my engine fitted to the chassis, but I still need to finish everything else. Good Luck!

thanks to all, just thinking about a modern engine that are cheap cant afford the coyote.....I have a set of AFR heads sitting in a box and with other go fast parts should be good. just worried that california will get even more stupid with the smog, they just announced that they will ban all aftermarket turbo chargers sold starting in 2019

CA ban on turbos — That’s just stupid!
If I had one and lived there I’d move. Well, to be fair I had my 86 when I lived out there and I did move.... guess I’m biased.
I would only consider a 3v. Because of the Coyote, they almost give 3V away. That being said, for all the parts and pieces needed on top of the engine/tranny, you could build a 347 or even a 393/408 engine and have money left over.
I keep wanting to do something different, but I already have most parts for a 351 swap and it just gets expensive adding up swap headers, bellhousing, etc.

about a 30 thou over block (3.582" bore) with 3-3/4 inch stroker crank.
It comes with 6 " rods, 4954 cc's and 302 cubes, and you use a 2000 CA market Mustang for its emission complaince, and swap all the bits over.
OBDII it at the same time. That means fuel flap, Smart Lock removal, PATS code and transfer over the speedo and shifter. Over 400 street legal horspower hiding under the plastic cam covers if you get some proper rods and the right head work done.
Right away, a little 281 cube Noughtie PI is many hundreds of pounds lighter, and the engine is such a honey, the pizza base is sound.
See http://www.mustangandfords.com/how-t...r-motor-build/
Don't do it all at once, do a 2000 4.6 PI engine swap, don't be scared, and if you like it half as much as I think you will, then get a stroker fired up for it when dollars allow.
Quad cammers and 3V's are nice as well, but a stroker 4.6 puts a heck of a lot more low end torque on the table at significantly less cost, and gets you into the easier OBDII era, with a nice range or parts and a huge amount of grunt.
Cli won't bit you if you use the stock dual exhasust and with a Five speed and 3.73 or 3.27's, it'll be epic.

No one has said no to Supercharging, especially since Ford has said yes to it so often in the 4.6 and 5.4 and 5.0.
For others considering this, the SOHC 2V 4.6 is a brilliant engine with a 3.75 stroker crank and 3.582 overbore. 4954 cc...it's Ment to Be.
Kenne Bells newer 2.1, 2.6 and this 2.8's pump in a huge amount of boost, and the 4.6's are so abundant.

There definitely is nothing wrong with the 2V 4.6...other than the basic rotating assembly blows at about 450 but, that's true of the 3V too. The heads on a 2v require very little work to be really effective and make alot of power. You can make big power easier on a 2V than on a 3V, oddly enough.
Much as I hate the 4.6 and wasn't ever going to own a Mustang as long as they kept with that, there is a reality to be faced here.
the swap is easy, as there are **** loads of 2V Mustang donor cars out there. They are still Fox bodies, like it or not.
I’ve also considered the swap, but not for a performance minded car. My goal was a smooth and good sounding cruiser, the 2v 4.6 is so smooth and reliable.

For all the pain and trouble you are going through to swap in a 4.6L, I would just do a coyote swap instead.
Have some fun stories about CHP ..... I’d steer clear.
