    Default Pinion Flange question

Replaced the pinion seal on my 84 GT with 7.5in rear end. As I cleaned up the pinion flange I notice rubber gaskets/seals that extended down into the splines on the front on back of the flange.

Checked the shop manual and I don’t see these in the diagram. I also checked several sites to see if I could find replacements.

Are these needed? If so where can I get replacements? What are they called and do they have a part number?

That is just silicone sealant that was applied when the flange was installed prior to tightening the pinion nut (preload) to prevent any differential fluid from wicking out of the pinion splines and leaking after assembling. You could simply apply some around the backside of the pinion nut prior too tightening it down.

Thanks...that’s kind of what I thought after looking at them some more but the one on the right looked awfully well formed. Obviously the first I’ve done this. I’m leaning as I go. FEP is always a help!
