It's a GT (Turbo GT). All "W" engine codes were GTs in 1983 and 1984.

Turbo GTs are far more rare than even an SVO, correct? Then a convertible to boot. Seems worthy of a 2nd chance even if it’s in rusted out and mangled condition.

No, its not rusted and mangled. No real damage that I saw except parts picking. The only rust I saw was under the trunk lid. It would need a bumper cover, fenders (bent?) and doors (missing). Actually, now that I think of it, I saw the drivers side rocker panel had been sawed thru near the seat belt anchor.

Makes sense. Someone replaced the front bumper cover which made it look like an LX. So the only options I did not see were lower body protection and power locks.

Ok, now something interesting. DSO 89. I find a local dealer license plate frame in the car.

DSO 89 is in fact a vehicle that was built and kept by Ford for it's use until no longer needed and sold off to the general public. Most of these vehicles were used as perks for executives, management and other "important people". They would keep them for months to maybe a year or two until newer models replaced them as they were mixed into the fleet.

Others were used for promotional work and advertising.

The last thing these cars could have been were quality control and crash cars that Ford would test. These were the cars they would drive around on tracks and other proving grounds to see how they held up and also the ones that were outright crashed for safety tests. Basically these cars would have been destroyed so you're chances of having one are remote to nonexistent.

Basically your car would have been an executive or promotional car.

A/C code is T4 so the paint was originally 2E. (A/C code for 2A paint is T6.)

The numbers in the database/registry are just what I have entered. They are not total actual production.

My 84 GT turbo convertible is 89 DSO too. Wonder if Ford used several of them for something.

Someone needs to spring that one from its fate.

Remember, Ford field staff would generally be driving a company car. I had cars for as little as one month and as long as one year. Many times, the cars that weren't selling, we drove. I imagine gt turbo convertibles weren't necessarily big sellers.

Yep. that is true. I recall the directive from Pontiac execs that those with company cars would be driving Aztecs for the foreseeable future. HaHa. They figured if people saw them around they wouldn't be so scared of them.

In the early 2000s, we drove lots of Lincoln LS's...
