Default My Rustoleum Roll on Paint Job.

I bought this 83 GT back in April of 17 from Skip out in Colorado. It's a rust free car, actually it's dryer than a popcorn fart, but the paint is baked.

It was an $800 car so I figured it would be deserving of a $50 paint job. (Actually it comes out much more than that buying sandpaper, DA polisher, etc.)

The hood was smoked so I found one off an 85-86 along with front/rear bumper cover, and fenders. The originals were all pretty much beat to death and any plastic part has been killed by the Colorado sun.

I sanded everything down than began to apply the Rustoleum Topside gloss black paint. I thinned it with Penetrol and added enamel hardener then used a 4" foam roller. I let it dry a couple days after the first coat then wet sanded with 600. Applied another coat, wet sanded with 1k, third coat, wet sanded with 2k, then machine cut it with Meguiars 105 compound. Next step will be to machine polish with Meguiars 205 polish. The fenders still need wet sanded and another coat. The hood has been machine cut and us waiting for polish.

Besides my subpar prep work, it's turned out decent so far.

Sweet. I wonder how long it will look that good.

No clue. It lives in a garage so that will help, but I'd imagine if it was in the elements you'd have to keep up on it. The paint I'm using is Topside boat paint and the boating community says it holds up a lot better than regular Rustoleum enamel.

NICE JOB! You may be surprised how long it lasts, we painted a derby car with virtually zero prep with the same product, and it still looks decent to this day, sitting outside 3 years now, and racing in 4 different derbies!

    Wow! That looks good!
For a functional paint job, that paint looks good as it is.

Thanks guys. To make it look good, it's very labor intensive. I didn't want to mess with over spray and cleanup and not to mention the smell of painting inside an attached garage. My air compressor works better as a water pump so I had that issue as well.

    Looks good.
I've done something similar in the past using Rustoleum.
But I thinned it and ran it through an automotive spray gun....

Nice. I use Rustoleum all the time on race cars, pretty durable. I usually spray it. That turned out great though

Turned out great so far. For a daily driver or similar, should be perfect.

BKM...looks great man! I painted my 85 foxbody the same way but without the wet sanding between coats. I used the topside marine battleship gray, 2 coats, will wet sand and polish when the weather cools down a bit. Ive had my car sit out in the Hot San Antonio sun since I painted it 2 months ago....still looks good. Yall can check out my first post to see a before and after pic....enjoy!
