Those cars were bad news back in the day. I had one to drive for a week that was an '86. Black on red. It was 100% stock and would bark the Goodyears in 3rd gear every time. I love them.

I agree... I bought one in 99 for $200 because I wanted the T5. Body was rough. Head gasket was blown between 2&3 and the Turbo was leaking oil bad but the car still hauled a$$. Impressive for a mid-size car with a hurt motor.

Auto? For some reason, I thought they were all manual shift.

Nope. they were an option for the 83-88 Thunderbird and 83-86 Cougar with the 2.3 T. I forget what years the 5spd was an option.

5 spd was an option for all turbo coupes 84-88. I beleive they were only 5spd in 83 due to late availability.

83-86 xr7 was also the same.

That being said, I've driven a few 85-88 turbo coupes, but I really didnt care for them much. They are okay with the 5spd, kinda feel like a tempo with the auto. Plus since it has a turbo they are almost always beat on and more expensive. Sand rail guys also strip them abd dump the body.

The 86-88 302 is cheap, upgrades are plentiful (almost all 87-93 mustang stuff interchanges) and are usually in much better shape.
