    Default T5 Tech...

Question regarding the T5 transmission; the car goes into all gears when its not running, but when running, it won't go into ANY gear.
Is this a clutch cable problem? I know I had a similar problem with my '91, sometimes grinding while going into Reverse, but figured it was a bad synchro, but maybe only a clutch cable?

Possibly. Anything other than a stock cable or possibly a Maximum Motorsports are prone to stretch.

If you start the car with the clutch in and trans in first does the clutch work like normal?

Matt, that's a good question. The car is an all-stock '89 LX 5.0/5speed that I might be purchasing for the drivetrain. The engine runs, the 8.8 is there, figured if the synchros were good, I'd be ready to go! I'll have to find out whether-or-not it starts in first.

    Very common problem.

When your foot is depressed on the clutch, the pressure plate releases the disc, and therefore stopping the input shaft from spinning.

Therefore, if it's difficult to get into MULTIPLE gears with engine running, and easy with engine off, the clutch isn't releasing all the way. 99% of the time it's just a loose clutch cable.

Having your foot pressed on the clutch in theory is exactly like having the motor off, therefore the trans should shift the same with the foot on the clutch as it does with the motor off
