Who is this FJFJJFFJJ or whatever that keeps posting junk in the general tech forum? It has nothing to do with car's at all, just world headline type news.

I can't understand why they don't get banned. One false move and the rest of us get warnings or wrist slaps, yet these folks keep on posting spam all day....

Trust me! We are doing all that we can to rid the site of Spam and the people/bots doing it. You probably only see a small fraction of what pops up on the site on a daily . . . . Sometimes hourly basis. I am just one of several here and I often remove 3-5 spam posts a day and sometime many more.

Just deleted 8 in one section alone. It's a never ending process lately.

For the admins: I'm not sure if there's a setting in the site's parameters for this or not, but if it's possible to set it so members can at least flag the bot posts, it might make it easier for you guys to delete them. I'm not sure if there's a way to do it or not without messing up the security settings for the site. I think I speak for most folks in saying we'd be happy to help with it if we can.

As step one in filtering these out, my recommendation is to require post body display text and the hyperlink to match.

The other action is to require account activation process with a valid email that has not been blocked before. Heck possibly even domain. Yes it would almost immediately block out yahoo and gmail but perhaps it should since their signup processes are weak at best.

Just my thoughts for what they are worth. I've written a spam filter and an SIEM system that were both used by multiple public companies, not that I consider myself a coder anymore.

Down at the bottom of the post there are several icons to the right of the "Blog This Post" The last icon "Triangle" you can click on to "Report Post" That will send a flag alert to all Administrators and Moderators. We get notified of many of the Spam Posts and then we catch many on our own as we go thru the site.

I'll bet some college kids could code a pretty elegant solution.

Grab URL reputation from a site like webpulse it threat Explorer as part of the post filtering.

I thought this site required an admin to approve new members? I'm not sure how many new members we have on average, but it seems like it would be less than the number of spam posts.

There is no approval needed for new accounts. Only a valid email address and the ability to answer the verification question.

I somehow missed that button, and I really was looking for one! Thanks, I'll start flagging them when I'm in there.

If the number of legitimate new accounts is less than the number of spam posts that need to be deleted daily, then maybe it would be better to require admin approval? I'm really not sure how many new accounts we have on a day-to-day basis, but maybe it's worth doing it that way to weed out the bots?
