    Default ASC/McLaren Exhaust Manifolds

In November I bought a 1985 ASC/Mclaren Capri Vert. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a pretty well stripped '88 ASC/Mclaren Mustang Vert. I'm a little confused about the Exhaust Manifolds on both of them. They don't look like what I understand OEM manifolds to look like which I believe is each exhaust port feeding into a single tube back to the exhaust.

The Capri manifold looks like a shorty header but strangely port 5 and 7 feed to a single pipe and 6 and 8 individually feed back to the collector.

The Mustang looks like a shorty header with all ports fed individually to the collector. Did ACS use different manifolds than OEM. Somebody please unconfuse this newbie to Ford products.

Asc did not change the exhaust manifolds. They were the stock Ford items. The 85s are a bit hard to come by and I have seen two versions of tublar and the early ones may have been cast iron.. 86-93 should be pretty much the same but I have never looked them up in the parts book. If you need pictures let me know.

I"ll try to get a picture of them tomorrow and post. I just looked at Rock Auto. The 88's are the same as Rock shows. The 85's aren't, they show a solid cast manifold, while mine is tubular, just slightly different than the 88's. Since you've seen 2, I'll assume I have one of the two you've seen. Thanks for answering.

Exactly. Which leads to my next question. The piece on them looks like it's for tubing, or is it just a shield and a way to disperse the heat.

Those "stove pipes" are to heat the air going into the carb so it runs better when it's cold outside at startup. They connected to diaphragms on the OEM dual snorkel air cleaner. 1986 went to EFI so no need for them and 1984 had cast iron log manifolds making these a 1 year only item.

They may be only half year on the 85. I believe they changed mid year when they upped the HP on the CFI for HO.

The 4-into-1 vs 4-into-3-into-1 shorty header differences were about clearance to the convertible engine
mounts. The convertible engine mounts are larger than the ones used in coupes and hatchbacks.

A few years back I did a mockup of both styles that shows the differences. The mockup was done using
the original block and heads from my '85 Vert, and new factory-issue convertible-specific engine mounts.

The 4-3-1 headers are original to my '85 Vert. The 4-into-1 headers are the original ones from my '85
    hatch.

Excellent information. I bought a spare set to have ceramic coated but the one shield needed to be tacked on. I did not notice the difference until I bought the second set. The second set got ceramic coated but not installed yet. The second set matched the car.

The ASC verts. cars would not have the convertible version.as they shipped as hatch backs.
