Default Rear defrost switch light works when hatch wires are off

I noticed the other day my defrost switch lights up when activated. All well and good till I connected the wires on the hatch for the defrost that were disconnected by the previous owner when the window was tinted. When I connected the wires and turn the switch on there is no light. Disconnect the wires and the switch lights up. I am not familiar with the operation of the switch since I havent used it yet but from what I read there is a timer for the defrost so I am assuming it stays lit till the timer shuts it off. Any ideas?

My cars, the light stays on till the timer hits.

That's probably one of the bigger load items on the car. More likely then not you have a bad connection somewhere.

I switched it on with both wires disconnected from the back of the hatch and put the test light on the hot side (drivers side wire) and it immediately it tripped the lit up switch to off. Something is causing it to trip off when the circuit is complete. Not sure what.
