I took my 79 Pace Car out for a spin this AM. Did some errands.
Felt good to drive it again. First trip for 2018.

Tuesday 1am driving home.
Graphic Warning LED for running light lit.
Graphic Warning LED for brake light flicker.
DS running light on/off.
Slow turn signals. 4way flash ok.
Replaced DS running light socket. 3 wire all plastic.
There are 6 wires, but they pair up. Fixed.
Temp installed the Ranger's flasher. OK but too fast.
Another part to buy and not paying over 5.00.
On salvage yard list.
Managed to blow up brand new engine still in its break in period. Taking off from stop light a small boom then smoke. Shut engine down and coasted to side of road. Looked underneath and have dime size holes in front sump. Engine builder will make it right according to son. Just plain pissed. My engine builder is very reputable. Not quite sure what went wrong. Any ideas?

When I had holes in my oil pan it was because some parts of the rods had exited there. Never a good thing!
Sounds like you had what they call "catastrophic engine failure".
Hope the builder does make it right for you.

We're not fast racers, we're more what's known as half fast racers.
Kinda what I was thinking. Did everything I was supposed to do. Break in oil, on first conventional oil change. Engine builder is towing to his garage tomorrow. Will start removing this week to see what actually failed. Will try to post pics of holes in oil pan next week.

Lightened front steel bumper by 10lbs and installed Maximum Motorsports caster camber plates. I'll finish up tomorrow and schedule an appointment for an alignment.

Made my own 4eye lights cover out of polycarbonate plastic purchased from Homedepot for $20. I plan on window tinting or smoke spray them later. Instaled STEEDA windshield banner and painted top or rear spoiler black.

Recall of first sight, test drive, purchase 38 years today. A Tuesday.
Was a busy day. Sold a car, bought a car, then drove by family friend house to show off.
Did not really plan ahead doing this, just a casual lot visit to find out old car's worth
Two dealers. Two round trips. Made it to work on time 330p.

Plimary update of engine failure. After running scope through hole it looks like spot weld on windage tray let loose and hit rod which then punctured oil pan. Rods are intact. Engine coming back out and to builder. Complete disassembly to ck for any other damage. Has anyone else heard of this? By the way was Canton oil pan.

Good pickins at the pic a part yard today
Lower ps ws trim molding from 84 Mustang
TS flashers, various sources.
Lost the molding few weeks ago. Replacement will be fastened down well this time.
Tabs are broke off, but fits tight. Butyl, glue, screws whatever will fix that..
The #552 replacement flasher works perfectly. Found a Motorcraft too.
Solved the slow to no ts blink issue. Turn blinkers flash like new again.
Why a #323 flasher was in there is beyond me. Found out flashers are all not the same.
Seems more likely that the weld broke because something hit it (rod). Not saying it's impossible, but that could be an excuse so the builder could blame something besides his mistake. I don't know your builder and I could be 100% wrong, but that's the first thing I thought.
So I finally got my 85 running better.......had the spark plug wires one post off clock wise on the dizzy..........
I forgot the books and manuals all show the number 1 post in the wrong spot. I feel stupid.

Took short trip in the Mustang to Ann Arbor MI. Attended the huge annual summer street art fair.
Done that short trip many times since the 70's in every car and truck i have owned.
This drive to and from the show was as enjoyable as ever. Even after walking 3 miles.
On way back to car, seen 2 cars that got my curiosity as to why they were there.
University of Michigan is right there. Thought they may be experimental school test cars.
They were Teslas.
Sat in a white on white Model X. Windshield is impressive. Nice dash. Wing rear doors.
A work of art and tech deserving to be shown at the art show with U of M in background.
I think the other one was a Model 3. All glass roof.
Took the saleen for a nice cruise with some friends and got some ice cream. And on the way there the passenger side louver broke.
Drove it 30 miles to nephew's wife's family reunion picnic.
Rusty thin pass side fuel tank strap broke in back. Happened sometime enroute.
Arrived and parked. A strong gas odor revealed a tiny pinhole leak in tank where strap was.
Tank and strap were long overdue for replacement. Time has come for new NPD tank and related parts.
Could not reach tools and material in hatch, being under car with finger on hole.
I carry variety of spare items and tools just in case. Nephew was the helper.
A triage repair with drywall screw made hole bigger. Next size up opened hole much worse.
Finally, 1/4" flange screw bit into good metal. Added epoxy putty as gasket, then tightened bolt just snug.
No leaks. Finished up with a short nylon tie down for temp but strong tank support.
Lost a cupful of gas doing repair. Took 1/2 hour. Cleaned up, joined party to let epoxy cure well for drive home.
Epoxy used was same JB Weld SteelStik, used 2 years ago in similar temp repair of leaking engine core plug.
Worked great both times to help seal fluids pouring out badly enough to stop the car.

Lucky had help, good food, beautiful day in a park for a embarrassing emergency repair.
Good clean real restrooms at the picnic shelter with soap.
Had to clean my gassed soaked tee sleeve 2x with simple green and the wall dryer.
Made a memorable impression meeting new 'car' people wearing gasoline cologne.
Drove to NPD to pick up new fuel tank straps.
For all owners of 79-early 81 with rusty fuel tank straps:
Finally are available from NPD. In stock.

Temporarily wire tied a mechanical temp gauge to wiper arm on the Saleen to verify the factory gauge was reading way higher than it should be. I was right.
Installed new 12.5 gal fuel tank, straps, hoses. Everything fit perfectly.
Test drive ok. No leaks. Fuel gauge fine.
Did get a chance to see where the fuel gauge is after pouring 2 gal of gas into dry tank.
Tick under 1/4, low fuel light LED on. 1 gal more, fuel LED off. 5 gal says 1/2 tank.
Drove it to Woodward Ave. Cruisers are out already for this Saturday's official event.
Lots of Mustangs, new (2005 up) and old, even count, no II's.
Pics taken around 9:45pm on a workday Monday night. Weather was perfect. Lots of cruisers earlier.
Pub in background has open air lower and upper bar, a zoo on cruise day.
Found a good parking spot front row while we sat nearby at the curb. Red/red 'Vette is a mint 1964.

Ordered new trunk lid struts because the ones I bought a year ago aren't the right parts.
Drove to Woodward ave again. Weather perfect. Sat and watched 3 hours.
Every day more cars and people out. Many out of state plates.
The cruise route is being prepared for Sat event. Exhibits, signs. No portajohns yet.
Seen 2 Mustang II's, nice 86 Red SVO.
On way home on eway, a Hellcat got next to me at a 60 roll.
Suddenly took off loudly (and quickly). I needed 500 more hp.
A 70's Pantera cruised by too. All going home after outing.

An intermittent cluster light is annoying and not acceptable. Especially the oil pressure gauge area.
Pulling the cluster is not one of the fun jobs to do.
Old plastic cluster twist in holes crumble away, twist in light socket loses printed circuit connection.
Solved:
Parallel hard wired 3 cluster wedge bulb socket pigtails to existing regular wired dash light circuit.
Cluster printed circuit overlay is no longer used for cluster light power.
Rubber grommets fix the damaged, now oversized, cluster bulb holes. Mod 1 done few years ago.
Been using plastic push in pigtails with the rubber grommets. Work ok, but little loose. Low profile.
Recently found round 13mm rubber push in type work better. Made to take heat of halogen wedge bulb. Mod 2.
Now, a solid straight controllable depth fit into rubber grommets. Bright like new, dimmable, inexpensive.
Just found out slightly larger sockets (15mm vs 13mm) are avail. that may fit without a grommet.
15mm= DVD center hole.
Swept bits of white plastic cluster crumbs from under mask with acid brush. Buffed both sides with microfiber cloth.
Nearby dash VDO voltmeter was not as bright as main cluster. Changed 194 bulb to 2825, blue boot cap. A match.
