    Default hatch problem!

    Hi all,
I am having a hard time getting the hatch to close as it should on our 84 SVO. I assume that the hatch latch is the same as many different Foxbody Mustangs, so hoping someone can jump in here to give me some suggestion on adjustment or whatever is needed.

We have to shut the hatch with a lot of force (like slam), then it rattles/thumps as we hit bumps on the road.
    Any helpful suggestions are appreciated.

Is there a bushing on the body latch?

I have the same problem with my 88gt, and it's completely my fault. It was missing completely, when I got the car. I had an extra door striker lying around. They look similar, but I'm thinking they may be slightly different. You have to slam it a few times to get it to latch and it rattles pretty bad. I rarely ever open it or drive the car, so it stays on the backburner along with a few other minor repairs.

The hatch striker bushing is generally the biggest issue with hatch rattles and lack of latching properly. A good quality hatch seal and then properly adjusted hatch bumpers are the other two issues that can eliminate hatch issues.

Is the hatch original to the car or was it replaced?

If it's been off, hinge shims are another topic worth discussing.

They often rub between the quarter and the hatch too. This is because the curve on the hatches is actually not quite right compared to the body creating contact in the middle.

Interesting. The hatch on my LTD wagon rattles like crazy and generally doesn't hold very tight at all. I've been around Fords for quite some time now. I don't know why checking to see if the striker bushing had disintegrated was not on my list of things to do.

Here is the garage tech garden hose replacement. This is a stop gap untill I can afford proper striker catches early next year.

The six point star tool has to be a Torks T50, and a Predator or whatever electric drill probably won't be enough.

A work mate suggested an impact driver, but I didn't wanna ruin a borrowed tool from a workmates Bahco S910 Socket and Spanner Set 92 Piece 1/4 & 1/2in Drive set

    So I used:-

    my special 18" shifter,

    his Torx T50, and

    some hot water,

    replacement hose pipe, and .....

    mamas steak knife!.

Here's the result. NCAA, No Class At All , but a temporary fix.

Look for a write up on this in Fox Mustang Magazine soon

Why did the new bushings have to be split in order to get them on?
Doesn't the striker post come apart so the new bushings can be slipped over the end as shown in the xctasy pics above?

Strikers consist of the bolt, the bushing and a washer. The bushing fits between the bolt head and the washer. The washer was put in place prior to the threads of the bolt being cut which increases the diameter of the bolt so the washer won't come off without damaging the threads.

Ok I get it, thanks to all of you who responded to my question. It sounds like more than our SVO has had this problem.

After reading this thread, I ordered a new striker from NPD because I have the same problem. Very hard to close and rattles. When I looked at my old striker it had no bushing at all. Installed the new striker and closes perfect now. Thanks all.
