Thread: 351 W Heads

    Default 351 W Heads

Old school guy here and I have a question about heads.
I have a set of 1971 351W heads that have been ported on exhaust side,
3-angle valve job, screw in studs, guide plates, with trick flow double springs,
locks, retainers, valve seals. Valve size is 1.84 intake an 1.60 exhaust.
Will these heads flow as well as newer GT-40 heads...
    Thanks,
    Ed (ThunderStruck) Smith

Depends highly on the port. 351W D0oe heads I- 180 E- 122 unported, GT40P I-196 E- 144., unported. You can find all kinds of different flow numbers out there, but those are ballpark good numbers. 351W heads can be ported for quite a bit more, however. I "THINK" the D9's flow a bit better.

    Thanks for info,
These heads have a lot of work done on exhaust ports and the intakes look to be cleaned up and gasket matched...
I will take them and have them flowed and cc and see what I have...

Casting numbers will tell everyone a lot.

Bear in mind the E7 from the 87+ HO reportedly flows 160. "Terrible" E6's - around 155.

    Stock intakes, way less!

86+ EFI intake was 115 front and rear cyl, and no more than 135 on the other ports. 85- carb intakes were really no better.

Intake and headers and high flow cats and high flow mufflers help vastly.

D0OE heads with 5 angle valve job should flow well. Port cleanup will help big. Compression will suffer huge if you do not shave them down. I had a 74 351W with these heads in my Galaxie 500 when I was young. Shaved down, etc. I had a 360 degree rise Offenhauser dual plane with the cutouts in the center divider. 650 double-pumper on it that took an eternity to get jetted correctly. It ran hard, I was very impressed with the outcome. High 13's out of a sub-400 CID gun-boat is pretty good, especially for the early 90's.

Cleaned up well, most factory 289/302 castings can flow near 200cfm intake & 150cfm exhaust, generating 400hp@6000rpm (with a single plane and 750 Holley carburetor... with a high rise dual plane and 750 Holley it generated 380hp) with the Sherman Racing Engines 302, and C9 or D0 Windsor heads can easily achieve 220+cfm intake & 170+cfm exhaust. Them's entry-level aftermarket numbers of a handful of the aftermarket offerings, for a helluva lot less $ if ya DIY.

Thumper ported E7's are another less expensive stick appearing option.....

really want flow, another option is a clevor build .... and a lumpy cam
