Default 1986 5.0 correct engine color

    Hello all,

From doing some research on this topic, it seems to encourage debate. I'm not trying to stir anything up, but I'm getting ready to put the original engine back together in my 86 SSP and wanted to know if anyone had a solid answer, should my engine block and heads be Ford gray or natural/bare metal? And if it is supposed to be bare metal, any suggestions on clear coat to keep it from rusting?

    Thanks
    John

Bare metal is my understanding and to my knowledge that is what the MCA rule book states for the 83-92 5.0 engines.

I am definitely not the expert on all original concourse restorations so hopefully someone else with more experience and knowledge will help out.

IIRC, block and heads are bare metal with a little bit of overspray from the gray oil pan.

I have read/seen that before and it is probably true. Although I have to admit it doesn't make sense to me as to why Ford would paint the oil pan once installed. Seems it would be easier/faster/cheaper to have the oil pan painted and then install. Maybe it's just me!

my '90 7Up car is all gray, no bare iron. Dad bought the car new in March of '90, so I know it's original. However, the paint is extremely thin, and rust is showing thru it. Plus, I've been a Ford tech since '94, and saw both painted and bare in fox bodies. So, I disagree with MCA's assertion that all engines '83-'92 are bare iron. As for '86, I'd probably agree the block and heads were mostly bare, maybe thin coat or overspray.

to coat the fasteners. Pan bolts don't have any plating, from what I remember.

That's the only thing that I could think of, but still seems a bit strange to me. Then again Ford does some crazy stuff IMHO.

Gray pans are usually put on motors with forged pistons and chrome rings.
Agreed - both my 86 and my 89 are bare metal at the block and heads.

Personally I like the look of black high temp epoxy paint with AL heads and intake and valve covers matching the heads.

    Default Engine paint

I’m taking an engine and transmission out of an 86gt and it seems like it’s supposed to be a silverish grey. I cleaned the engine and you can see I took off the grey paint but it’s weird because if you look towards the bottom by the pan it looks bare. I’m trying to add a picture and I can’t figure out how to.
