Default correct bulb for 1986 AC/heater control panel?

Hello, New here and just got an 86 GT and am in the process of getting her up to speed. The lights behind the heater controls are out and were missing. I figured out the left side but the right side bulb I can't seem to find the correct bulb# to get. I tried a 194 and it works but gets extremely hot and has actually started to melt the plastic from the inside. Anyone know the correct bulb # to get for this? Thanks!

I believe a 168 is actually the correct bulb and not the 194 for the HVAC unit. The difference IIRC is the 168 is 2 candle watt power and the 198 is 3 or 3.2 candle watt power. So the 168 doesn't get as hot as a 194 and doesn't provide the same amount of illumination.

If it were me, I would swap the standard 194 for a quality 194 LED bulb. You will get the same or better illumination, with less heat. Good Luck!

Thank you, just ordered some 194 Led from Amazon for instrument cluster and I was incorrect the 194 is working fine on the left side of the panel, the right side had a 1893 bulb that was melting the faceplate. I switched to 1816 yesterday but again not sure if that is the correct bulb for that spot either.

just to follow up the 194 LEDs I got from Amazon (pack of 10) work well in the dash, gauges and turn signals which are noticeably brighter, easier to read and less RED, which I prefer.

The Ford schematics bulb chart lists the hvac controls as a 161 bulb.
