Size: 55.1 KBI know it's not a Four Eyed fox, but it's going to be a great first car for my daughter.

Ill try to download the dealer pics and video before they pull it

    http://www.corwinfordnampa.com/used/...ource=cars.com

I have to believe all the cheeky details in this little car that are oh S o Mercury was built with a newer generation of the same creative spirit as our beloved four eyed Capris and Cougars.

There are SO few of these ever on the road. 99% of the people out there will have no idea what it is or what year it is but the will look at it and appreciate its build.

looking forward to getting shipping all setup and taking delivery. For once I was in a spot where I just paid cash for a car.

Looks very clean. I'm sure it'll be a great first car for her.

Beats my first car which was a '59 Rambler Ambassador wagon that my dad bought for $50 as my high school graduation present. Not that I complained. I was just glad to have my own wheels.

My best friend had one with a stick shift after owning a first then second gen probe... I always thought these were kind of a 3rd gen Probe. He had good luck with the car until a large buck decided to jump in front of him one night. I do remember these v6s sounding excellent once opened up a bit. I'm sure your daughter will enjoy it!

    My four eyed foxes:
"Trigger" - 86 Mustang GT - Black with red interior. 5.0 T5 built as Z. Original motor ~1/2 million miles. 18 yr daily, 10 a toy
"Silver" - 85 Mustang Saleen 1985-006? (Lol) Rare 1E silver GT / charcoal interior. The car is a little bit of a mystery. Current project bought as a roller, tons of Saleen / Racecraft pedigree

Also in the stable - my son’s car. 1986 Mustang GT Convertible. Black/Black/Black conversion. 93 leather. VM1 ECU. T5Z

    past foxes -
1989 Mustang LX Sport 5.0 AOD white/tan black top. Once I ran this one down I caught a wife.

Nice looking car. Clean. Like you said, rarely seen today. Curious: was it something she was specifically looking for, or just stumbled on and liked, or you were pointing her towards? For my daughters, it was the latter.... I pointed in a couple directions and they zeroed in from there.

My wife and I went out looking at cars. We saw a black 2002 Cougar and we knew that would be a GREAT car for our daughter. Then we found this blue one all the way out in Idaho and had to have it.

It's the only low miles Cougar I've found that's Blue and has V6, auto, leather, and sunroof.

I like the cats in various places on it -- it's neat.

Was also very attracted to its these car's service history. There are so many still on the road with over 200K miles on them. They share a lot of mechanicals with other reliable FWD F/L/M cars of the 2000's. Made it an easy decision for me.Name: cougar23.jpg

BTW -- if anyone knows of a good transport service that they've used before and can recommend based upon positive experience please let me know.

This one needs to be hauled from ID to NE or I'm going to have to fly to Boise and drive it home......

There was one around here for sale a while back that tempted me. It had all of the Contour SVT goodies swapped in.

    Try uship.com for shipment.

When I lived in California, our building manager had one of these in Dark Green. She was very fashion-conscious(think Nicki Hilton) and loved that car. Isn't Nampa 'IDMooseMan' country? Congrats to your daughter, she's very lucky

A coupe, a hatchback, 70K miles, an 196HP V6 engine, and traction control!
I think I'm in love with that car!

    From:
    https://www.autoblog.com/buy/2002-Me...expert-review/
    ========
    Lineup
For 2001, Cougar is offered in base ($16,700) and S trim. Base-level Cougars offer a choice of two engines.

The standard engine is a 2.0-liter double overhead-cam 16-valve inline four-cylinder rated 125 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque. Ford calls this engine the Zetec. The optional Duratec dohc V6 displaces 2.5 liters, and rates 170 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. The V6 comes with a heavy-duty alternator, upgraded suspension and brushed exhaust tips. Technically, the base V6 lists as a separate model, priced at $17,200.

Cougar S ($22,050) is powered by a 196-horsepower, 168-pound-feet version of the Duratec V6; it rides on an even stiffer suspension, and adds traction control and four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS, plus a higher level of luxury and interior appointments. Externally, the Cougar S can be distinguished by its fog lights, 17-inch wheels, and free-standing decklid spoiler (re-styled for 2001).

    From:

    ==============
The Duratec 25 is a 2.5 L (155 CID; 2544 cc) 60° V6 and was introduced in 1994. It was developed for the Ford Contour and used in the Ford Mondeo, Mercury Cougar, Mercury Mystique, Jaguar X-Type, and others. The Duratec 25 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995 and 1996, and the SVT version made the list for 1998 and 1999.

An SVT version produced 195 hp (145 kW) and 165 lb·ft (224 N·m) in 1998. Further improvements were made in 1999 that raised power output to 200 hp (149 kW) and 169 lb·ft (229 N·m) and were carried over in the 2000 model,14 L/100 km (17 mpg-US). The SVT engine was used in the 1998-2000 Ford Contour SVT, as well as the Ford Mondeo ST200 which was a limited edition model produced, and sold in Europe.

    GREAT CAR and choice, congratulations!

Yea, I'm definitely looking forward to driving it a little myself. It should be a really fun little car!

I looked and looked at newer cars but couldn't find anything for less than $10K that I thought may have been "better". Always a guessing game with used cars. Hopefully it will work out.

There are a few bright yellow Cougars out on cars.com and cargurus.com along with a bright green one too. All less than 100K miles and in nice shape it looks like.

This one was the only blue one.

Nice Cougar! I've always liked these and can't quite figure out why. About a year ago, we were in the market for another cheap car. I looked at a couple of these and couldn't make a deal on them. They were a little rougher than we wanted. I did a little reading up on them and learned that one of the reasons they aren't quite as popular for performance mods is because the transmissions aren't really up to the task...particularly the autos. I guess it's sorta like the mustangs and the t5. Good for factory power levels, but not much more. Of course, I'm just going by what I read. Could have just been some idiot on the interweb who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express or whatever lol! We will be in the market for another cheap car this year. Who knows? Maybe we'll find a nice cougar!

These are super popular here with the 4 banger.

$1200 will buy a rough but daily driven car. There kinda cool, sorta like if a escort zx2 and a ford contour had a mercury.

Not enough car for me though.

Yeah, tall people have trouble with them, but the 2.5 is sweet. Anew Edge front drive coupe is hard to pacakge small. The Cougar did it, but its dual exhast and everything in it is jam packed.

It's an interesting process when you are shopping for your kids first car as what they think of as ideal and what you think of as ideal are usually not exactly the same. At least that's how it was when we bought our son his first car. We were more concerned with what we thought would be safe and reliable and his priority was that it not be something his friends made fun of.

He looked for cars and I looked for cars and it was decided that we each had veto power, so no purchase would be made till we both agreed. I had the upper hand though since I knew he didn't want to wait forever and I was in no particular rush.

We ended up with an Escort ZX2 which he drove for a couple years till he was able to buy his own first car. It worked out well as he had very little trouble with that car. I still remember mom giving me hell because it was a stick and he was just learning to drive. She thought it would be too hard to learn on a stick but he passed his driver's test with it and still prefers stick cars today some 10 years later.

Awesome! I had a 2000 2.5 5-speed. Even in silver to match my Zeph. Two Mercury 2-doors aimed at the same demographic, separated by 20 years.

That was a sweet driving little car. The V6 was silky smooth. Unfortunately mine was a flood/collision repair/salvage title mess. At the time, that was the only way I could afford a V6 5-speed. And since there weren't many of these around (this was 2005), there weren't many to choose from. I do tend to be too impatient though. I wanted a Cougar V6 5-speed, dammit! And this one was even silver!

Anyway, the 3.0 Duratec is a common swap in the Contour world. Skip the SVT's upgraded 2.5, and go straight for the good stuff!

Jason - we all might have though less of you if you didn't think about flaming me. Lol.

But hey - I'm pretty sure the early 2000's Cougars will out brake and out corner a stock four eyed fox by a pretty good margin. 4 wheel disc and abs and 4 wheel independent suspension helps. There's lots of rubber under those cat center caps on the 17's -- especially for such a little car.

I give it a snowballs chance in hell of making faster laps on a road course than most of our modified four eyed foxes but against a stock fox smart money is on the Cougar -- driving talent is equal.

Would be fun to back half one and cram rear wheel drive running gear and a 700HP fire breathing stroker in one. Might look about like a bottle rocket off the line. Just hope it doesn't go boom.

hey - widen the wheels so it looks factory from the side. Lol.

    Nice picture, thanks for sharing!

Would be relatively easy to turn one into a two seater and go mid engine wouldn't it....
