Size: 208.7 KBI just acquired a brown 80’/81’ Cobra. It needs a roof, floors and everything else. It’s a 255w, auto, factory window louvres car. Brown/ black two tone paint, tan interior, and cruise control. I’m having trouble decoding the buck tag completely, so if anyone can help I’d like to know if it’s worth restoring or parting out.

I can tell you that I know probably more than anybody else regarding buck tag codes, and even I don't know what all of the codes mean, so you're not going to be able to decode the buck tag completely.

Are the wheels factory? I can’t find anything that says they are, and the only other brown 80’/81’ Cobra I’ve been able to find through google has the same wheels. I doubt it’s the same car.

Wow how cool would that be if it was the same car, has same stripe, and rear louvers.... interesting

It needs everything including a roof. It’s rusted from a pillar to a pillar with a couple holes out back too. Thanks! The seller was going to scrap them on a Monday, so I sealed the deal on Sunday. By them I mean this Cobra, a 79’ low option Capri, and an 85’ Capri.

Those wheels were not factory. They're aftermarket.

OEM wheels for all Cobras were forged metric aluminum "TRX".

The louvers on your 1980 Dearborn #81262 were factory. The louvers on the above unknown Cobra are aftermarket.

How can you tell that they are aftermarket? And are there any numbers as to how many got louvers from the factory?

  13. #13

    Default

It's the number of 'slats' on the louvers. Factory louvers had 12 slats. Aftermarket louvers had 10 or less.

You'd have to contact Marti Auto Works and pay them to research for you how many 1980 Cobra had louvers.

Gotcha. Thanks for your help! It’s nice to know that I can probably sell the louvers for what I have in the car lol, but that’ll never happen.

Nice rare find with that colour! Too bad on the condition.

Does it have the Recaro seat interior? That would be cool!

If the rest of the body is solid and you have a clear title. That would be worth restoring in my opinion.

    Thanks for the breakdown Foxchassis!

The real question is will an 80’ Cobra be worth anything being primarily an appearance package option? I understand they’re somewhat rare, but it’s a 255, auto, non Recaro, non t-top car. Since it needs a roof and I’ve always wanted a t-top, do you guys think it could hurt the future potential value of the car if I were to do that? T-tops seem to be hot right now, but given the rarity I might feel more inclined to go back original as possible so I don’t have to take that gamble. I’m obviously torn, so what do you guys think?

It it doesn’t have a title. I purchased it from a guy that owns a wrecker service. He towed the car 15 years ago. Also, if anyone knows a way to check a vin for free please let me know. 11-digit vins are hard to run according to every page I’ve come across online.

Do 255s have a special number casted into them, or are they just a continuation of the standard 302 w/ smaller bores?
