1984 Ford LTD Crown Victoria ALL OEM Technical Service Bulletins, 87-1-15 5.0L ENG STALL AT IDLE/ERG VALVE STUCK - CARBON TRAP on the TSB

Its just a carbon trap. EGR's clogg up all the time, so it should help. 1984 Ford LTD Crown Victoria's don't have the same intake as the 4V's, although the 2V CFi's might.

To clean it out, it should be okay if Trichlorethylene or Iso Propyl alcohol is used.

On the list, its the 93 rd item down.

This is a vey important TSB site, so it doesn't support Active X ,and your details and those of your car are required, so the Ebay Reference hasn't copied the TSB 87-1-15 details over.

Yes it does work. I can't count how many of those I installed back in the day.

Ok I thought it was somehow supposed to cool the exhaust going thru the egr. Which could have helped my problem I was having with really hot carb. and gas odor. I think diesel egr coolers use the cooling water to cool. I thought this item was some type of cooler I did find my egr was stuck open a little with carbon, not any more.

Correct, Dave9052, its listed via Fords part number system as an EGR cooler. EGR cheat devices are illegal, unless they are Ford Standard parts.

EGR is techncially a cooling device to look after NOx emissions. Its purpose in life is to use spend exhaust as a cooling agent to moderate combustion temperatures under cruise conditions as per the LA Basin federal emissions test.

D, F and M and Q code 2-bbl, CFi and 4-BBL's from 4.2 to 5.8 liters got it as a dealer installed item, and Ford gave it an application specfic part number and name. It was the same thing, different semantics.

Google search "egr cooler for 4bbl 5.0" under Images, and you'll get
"NOS 1983 1984 1985 FORD MUSTANG GT 5.0L INTAKE MANIFOLD EGR COOLER E7PZ-9F464"

or another slightly different one with an external in an out line

"EGR Valve Cooler Coolant 85 86 87 Lincoln Silver Blue Mark VII LSC 2 Dr 5.0 OEM E45E9H-470-A4A"

    "ORIGINAL 81 - 82 F100 F150 F250 E100 5.0L EGR COOLER ASSEMBLY E1TE-9F464-BA"

Since 1981, its been a 4-bbl F100 truck option under other Ford TSB's.

It cools the peak EGR temperature by radiant heat, but it is technically a carbon trap. Since its got a TSB attached to it, Ford got to call it an EGR cooler.

Its not, its a corrective carbon trap to fix an in service "too hot to handle" EGR valve matter.
