    Default Steering column swap.

My 83 coupe is actually an late 82. It has a left over column from 82 with push button horn. Im wanting to swap in an 84-86 tilt column. Will the wiring at the plugs be the same? Need advice from someone whos done this before. Thanks in advance.

The horn on the turn signal lever continued in 1983 so it has the typical horn system in it for a 1983 model. The steering wheel shaft is different between 82 and 83 though. What you are wanting to do can be done but I don't know if it is a direct swap from 84 or later.

Some of the earlier cars have splines on the steering wheel. Other then that, everything else pretty much bolts on to a column. I have added a tilt column to a car that didn't have one. I also used a mustang column when I swapped it on my cougar. I also added the column shifter to one that didn't have a shifter.

Most of the points have been mentioned above. To condense it a bit, your column should be a splined shaft for the steering wheel. The 84-86 will be the D shaped shaft for the steering wheel. No big deal, but you will have to have a new steering wheel.

All the switch gear such as turn signals, wiper, etc. will swap from one column to the other. The 84-86 will have the horn button in the center of the steering wheel and not on the stalk. The wiring under the column should interchange between the two IIRC and allow you to use the later model column with the steering wheel horn.

I did this swap on my 79 PC went from splined shaft to D shaft using the late 83-86 column and switches with the steering wheel horn. Everything works and was no big deal from what I remember, but then again that was 8-10 years ago. Good Luck!
