    Default Cooling Fan upgrade

Any guys running the Contour dual fans? If so how are you mounting it to the stock radiator? Any other options for upgrading fans that will bolt in place of the stock fan...

Hope someone chimes in with good info. I have a set of contour fans for my Fairmont that I have not tried to install yet.

Stock fan will out cool just about any electric setup. The "upgrade" to electric is to limit parasitic draw when a fan is not needed.

If you are overheating with a stock mechanical fan, an electric will overheat also.

SVO has a factory electric fan...so going to duals would be an upgrade from the single factory fan.

Look at the link in my signature for the FMIC build thread I did. In that thread I used a big Spal fan (if I remember right) drawing power threw a relay from the battery. But its hooked up so that the factory sensor and fan controller still have control of the fan for activation. This will take the load off the factory fan switch so you don't melt it! This set up has worked very well now in a daily driven car for a while now.
If you blink at the end of the straight away you'll miss the twisties and what fun would that be!

Eric The Car Guy apparently just installed a Spal dual fan setup that supposedly flows over 4000 CFM. I don't know which one he has though, since when I was looking at aftermarket fans, I couldn't find ANYTHING that fit a stock Fox radiator and flowed more than 3000 or so. I guess maybe we have to wait until he posts the video to find out what he used.

4000-4500 is the number I've been using as a reference because my aftermarket A/C retrofit kit says in the directions they will not warranty the parts if your electric cooling fan doesn't flow that much. They WILL if you have the stock clutch fan. So the conclusion I drew from that is that the clutch fan flows 4000-4500 CFM.

I could only find forum posts (pretty much hearsay) about CFM numbers for OEM electric fans, but I believe the Contour fan is a good one. I went Mark VIII just because I wanted the baddest of the bad. Although unfortunately my engine is sitting too far forward so the Mark fan doesn't fit. So, I need to investigate that before I can install it. If I'd gone Contour fan, i could be enjoying the cooling power already. Oh, and Contour fans can be had NEW, so you don't even have to gamble on used parts!

I installed the Contour fans on my SVO, I still have yet to go down the road with it as the car has taken longer then hoped to get back on the road. Anyways here are some pictures of the fans, they are installed on a SN-95 aluminum radiator that I scored off of CL.

For some reason the fans only came with a heat shield on the drivers side for the fan motor, luckily they are interchangeable so I took one from another Contour in the junk yard for the passenger side fan motor.

Here is also a link to an article about the upgrade.

Ended up getting a Contour fan from the junkyard for $35. I just need to figure out how to attach it to the radiator with the Gnari front mount. I may need to adjust some of the intercooler tubes. I’ll post pics when I’m finished.

Finally finished up the install. Bought 2 Hydorn fan relays with adjustable temp settings. Wired one fan at 185 and the second at 195. Second fan will also be tied into the AC clutch.

Looks great! What did you use to attach the shroud?

What are the amp ratings on your relays? I've installed relays rated too low for an OEM fan and paid the price for it.

Used the universal fan zip tie install kit to attach. The relays are 40 amp. They work good so far.

Man, I don't know if that's going to do it. Mine worked great too until they didn't. Dakota Digital makes some 75 amp relays; you might want to consider those. They are pricey for relays, but better that than getting stranded with an overheating engine.

I’ll look into it. Wonder if I can use the relay only. My wiring is pretty beefy for my power feeds.

My Taurus fan worked for about 40k miles and a year and a half on a single 40 amp relay.

The contour uses a 30amp relay originally.

We used the countour fans on my son's 84 GT Turbo. To mount it to the radiator (mishimoto 2 core), i had an unknown name brand stainless steel radiator hold down bracket/cover similar to this (https://lmr.com/item/LRS-8291CBL/79-...8aAvisEALw_wcB). I just flipped it over and used rivets to anchor it to the fan assembly and the used some stainless bolts on top to mount it to the radiator. I'll try to get a pic taken an posted.

I put one out of a 1986 Taurus in my SVO. Plugs into the stock connector as well. Mounted it by drilling the top of the radiator flange and using u-bolts up with radiator zip ties on the bottom. I'm using the Gnari kit too which pushes everything back to make room for the intercooler.
