When I fill my tank in my '83 GLX vert it leaks fuel until I burn off a couple gallons. Is this the tank or at the connection between the tank and the fiil hose or a cracked fill hose ?

Tough to tell...can you not see where it is coming from? Most likely culprit is the rubber grommet where the filler neck enters the tank has deteriorated. Its a ~$17 part and a pretty easy fix. The filler neck is metal as I recall, or plastic...not a rubber hose. It could be bad I guess, but I would bet on the grommet. I guess the other culprit could be a rotten tank with a hole somewhere...in that case a new tank is also an easy replacement. Either way a grommet, filler neck or tank are all readily available with good youtube videos out there on how to do it.

It is definitely coming from the top of the tank - I'm betting you're right about the grommet. Thanks
I just replaced mine on my 85. Actually got the seal on amazon.
Had to drop the tank a bit to get it on.

Turned out it was a hole in the tank at the seam at the rear of the tank where the strap passes driver's side.
