Default FIA Group A 1982 Mustang

European Touring Car Series, Spa 24 Hours, German DTM, and Dutch Saloon Car Championship history.

Famous names attached include Vince Woodman, Paul Belmondo, and Bert Moritz.

THIS is probably the pinnacle of a historic racing racing 4Eye Mustang.

I may be biased, as the fella who did most of the restoration is a friend and a true mechanical craftsman and a few bits and bobs from my garage ended up in the car for it's restoration.

The photos are something to just stare at.

Yes, you can find this car on the Goodwood YouTube channel and on Frank deJong's European Touring Car webpage.

    Enjoy.

For the $320k asking price, I hop he paid good for the little bits you gave him. Imagine spending $235k on restoring a fox. I couldn't imagine spending much more then $20-30k. There I would have done everything I wanted done and had a pretty fast car.

IMHO, the nicest looking US cars of the 80's in race trim.

    The Zakspeed Belga/Esso car

and the Belmondo Mustang in its two colorings

It was Ford SVO's ex Zakspeed Engineer Michael Kranfuss who decided on the

    AP 4 spot disk brakes,
adjustable spring hanger and upright IFS,
Capri ZF Gear 7.5" Atlas axle,
the BMW M51 "26x" series Getrag 5 speed,
and the Jack Roush Indy 500 PC style engine.

These first international Group A Mustangs were the first out of the womb.

The Jean Claude Belmondo's son raced it.

SVO was set up in 1981. The first Mustang was the European Touring Car Challenge/DTM Klaus Niedzwiedz Mustang, most likely a 2v GT. So DJR could have been an 82, its possible. Dick Confirms his Zakspeed car was ex Klaus Niedzwiedz, NO PICTURES

Looking at Paul Kooymans perfect photo's, it looks like the first 4V 83 GT European outing was July 31, 1983 at the Spa 24 hrs. Pilots were Philippe Martin (B)/Jean-Michel Martin (B)/Vince Woodman (GB)

    http://www.racingsportscars.com/suff...ustang/GT.html

Later, Zakspeed took the 4-bbl 83 spec Mustang, not the 82 since it would have been a 2-bbl. The compliance work was then done very quickly, but they used a huge amount of Group 2 parts for which they already had ETCC approval, so the first Paul Belmondo 24 HR Spa Mustang GT July 29 1984 was a 83 compliant Group A car with 100% 4v engine, but BMW Getrag 265 series 5 speed, German Capri brakes and a Roush engine tune pretty close to the early 79 Indy Pace Cars. But the details were poor, with not more than 260 hp in the example Dick Johnson dynoed at Brisbane Engine Reconditioners. That's why it didn't do so well.

From 83 to late 84, all Group A's pre 1984 regulations made things very restrictive on intake manifold and valve lift and operation. You couldn't run roller cams until after you had sold 5000 cars with the package, or made proof of your intentions to do so.

With the stock intake manifold unstiched, hand ported to within and inch of its life, and re-expoxied together under a 650 CFM Double Pumper Holley 4-bbl, by 1987, the 1984.5 roller cam spec Group A engines was making well over 350hp, possibly 390 hp net.

Compared to the other flat tappet V8's, it was seriously down on power. The other 5 liter Holden V8's were making 469 hp at 6700 rpm, and even the TWR Twin Throttle body Rover Vitesse 3500's were making well over 340 bhp by 1986 from just 215 cubic inches.

Some money exists for these now! Rather like a Model T, as long as you have tags, you can rebuild it for money.

One of New Zealand Pine Pac Group A Mustangs, "Abes Babe", (Don Smith purchased, ex Zakspeed, Europe, Car # 69 Nu-Truck Spares livery and driven by Don Smith/Barry Seton in 1984 Bathurst, http://www.nzmustang.com/Images/Hist...s/pinepac1.htm)

It looked like it was the end for it, but it had been rebodied before after accidents and other king hits....

when it was No 52 as well, look at this:

was sold to a French owner after its near write off in 2012 for a huge sum. All the early ones are much loved machines the world over, and cherrished.

Lookes like the Belga/Esso 23 has had at various times

had the 15" 4V aftermarket tall air cleaner top,
    kind of like a blend of 15" 2V 82 GT/RS and 17" 4V GT/RS air cleaners.
Power steering in the original, taken away for the rebuild.

Typical of the rather loose interpretation of Group A rules the Europeans have always had...

    no round headlamps....

The restoration has put things back to original pre October 1984 spec

Super cool. Every time I see one of these cars I'm tempted to test fit some round headlights to my '83.
