Sorry trey, i lost my dad 5 years ago at the age of 61 after a 2 year battle with a rare form of dementia. It took 40 years for Vietnam to kill him. He was in the 101st airborne and was made to do unthinkable things that he always kept from us. And struggling through life he always put food in front of us and a roof over our head. These guys are some of the finest examples of Americans. Still brings me tears to think about him as we did not always see eye to eye until I was grown. Prayers buddy

So sorry to hear about this Trey. My thoughts and prayers are sent to you. Unfortunately, one way or another we all end up dealing with these situations and I wish all the best to you and your family.

Thanks again to everyone that has responded here, via email, and text. I greatly appreciate the support, thoughts, and prayers from everyone. I know our situation is not unique or unusual and I can completely empathize with all that have gone thru these trying times before. I hope that others may read this and see that we all deal with the same challenges and that giving friendly support and well wishes can have an immediate impact on the lives of others.

Unfortunately I don't really have any significant news to provide at this time. Dad is doing ok. They are going to keep him at this point for up to 5 days for observation and tests. He is not really doing better, but not any worse at this point. He was awake and interactive a bit yesterday so that is a good sign. Unfortunately he is running high blood pressure and still in pain/discomfort and generally just sleeping most of the day. The doctors are trying to test to verify his kidney function as well as neurological issues that might be causing the hallucinations, dementia like symptoms, and the general drowsy condition. Hopefully they are able to provide some insight and help in this regard. I will continue to post updates as the days go by. Thanks once again for all the well wishes and support.

I'd like to offer some poignant thoughts, but the best I can do is keep you in my prayers. My mom passed last year at 90 after suffering 2 years from COPD. My dad is now 85 and still lives alone taking care of himself pretty well, but he was her primary caregiver and after having surgery to put a stint in, it almost killed him taking care of her. I just spent a week in Corpus Christi with him. He service 22 years in the Air Force and served in Vietnam. It's hard to see two people who raised you, instilled their work ethic in you, made you the person you are today, slowly become less and less of themself. Thankfully my mother was coherent til the bitter end. My dad is slower moving, but hell after Harvey he got on his roof to see where the water sports in his ceiling came from (roof vents).

Hang in there and enjoy your dad's company in any manner possible, Trey!

Good news this evening. Dad was awake, alert, and aware. Doctors allowed him to eat some Chicken noodle soup so that made him at least a bit happy.

His Potassium level is still very high, but it has dropped some. Unfortunately that messes with his diabetes and heart issues. They will keep him in the hospital until the drop the level to normal, so we have no idea right now how long that might be.

The other good news is that if he has a good night tonight and no other issues they will move him from ICU to a regular room tomorrow.

Thanks once again, I greatly appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, and well wishes from everyone!

Trey - that's good to hear. Is it possible that poor circulation combined with low red blood cell or low blood oxygen is causing him trouble? I know the doctors do what they do and are the experts but my troubleshooting mind always likes to try to help.

My grandpa would get nearly unresponsive if his oxygen levels got too far down. Frequently it was onset of a complication due to his emphysema and chronic bronchitis causing a touch of pneumonia, etc. But sometimes it was just pants being too tight, etc.

This has been the frustrating issue for my mother and the rest of us over the past year or so. He goes for a bit where he seems to be mentally fit without major issues. Then one day he will be just not mentally be there, then things progress to the point of hallucinations, and just not being mentally fit. We take him to the hospital and often for a couple of hours its like he can turn it off and be perfectly normal. Then the doctors look at us like we are crazy!

We explain what is happening and of course they respond with "well we don't see that now" We tell them to wait just a bit and sure enough a couple hours later he's bonkers again. He did the same with this visit. Was crazy and out of it at home, but seemed just fine in the ambulance and when admitted to ER. They moved him up to a room for overnight, then when he got there he suddenly couldn't stay awake and then became unresponsive. That is when the DR's asked us what is happening and once again we said this is why we keep bringing him in! At that point they moved him to ICU and we went from there.

We are not sure if this is medication related, oxygen deprivation related, neurological, or what. His oxygen concentration when at the hospital is generally in the 95% or better range, blood sugar level is within range, blood pressure might be a bit high, but not excessive. We are looking at all possibilities and options but nothing seems to be the smoking gun. Most likely this is multi faceted and is several issues due to his health condition, but honestly I feel that since most doctors today are specialists it seems that very few really understand how their specialty interacts with the rest of the body and therefore can't seem to figure out how their area of expertise being an issue might affect an other area etc. Also the different drugs and how they interact with the body seems to be a real mystery. I can't tell you how many times we have been told that this symptom or that one might be a very rare side effect of this drug or that drug.

We have finally been able to get an appointment with a Neurologist for later this month after trying for several weeks otherwise the first available would have been after the New Year! Maybe they can shed some light on these issues or provide us with some insight at least in regards to how his brain is really doing.

Oh a just like has happened before, he seemed normal when we got to the hospital as he has done before, but when he finally woke up and was really interactive yesterday morning he admitted that he doesn't remember ANYTHING after the ride in the ambulance to the hospital, so again he has lost almost 2 days. Hopefully today is another good day and they can move him from ICU to a regular room. His sister is supposed to visit today so that is good. Just still praying for the best. I don't expect him at this point to really get "better" or fully recover, I just pray that he can have more "Good" days than bad and at least a reasonable quality of life. That will help to take a huge weight and stress off my Mother and hopefully make what time they have left as enjoyable as possible.

Thanks again to everyone here on FEP! I appreciate all the prayers, thoughts, and words of kindness. Just one more reason why I truly enjoy interacting with this great group of people.

Medicines and the interaction of medicines are something I don't doctors pay enough attention to, especially in the elderly when they are seeing specialists all the time. I see it right now with my mother in law. One Dr says take this 2 times a day. Goes to the next says here take this and cut that down to 1 time a day. Has problems goes back to first Dr he says why did you quit taking this 2 times a day? etc

When my dad had the stint placed the admitting Dr changed his meds and said, oh on your NEXT appt with your cardiologist have him check and see how these meds are working. About 2 days later he almost fainted. My mom called the neighbor who is a paramedic and my dad's bp was like 80 over 40 and his pulse was 42. It was the change in BP and cholesterol meds the hospital Dr did. Almost killed him.

Anyway, progress is progress. And really all we all can hope for is more good days than bad, right? Prayers still up!

So sorry for your problems with your Dad. We went through something similar with my Dad this past year. Multiple issues; cancer, afib, BP, blood chemistry, etc. Made it very difficult for Drs to treat each issue without affecting something else. Multiple ER visits and ICU stays along with hospital and nursing home stays. We ended up bringing him home for hospice care so he could spend his final days at home with family. Probably the most difficult/stressful time of my life. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Trey - thoughts based upon lessons learned while my grandmother dug into so many problems while my grandpa was gradually going down hill -- look at absolutely everything he's taking in, using, and the entire environment around him.

My grandpa passed in 1990 so you can well imagine the amount of time family spent in the library and the pharmacy getting drug details and interactions, etc. Pre-internet made what grandma did nearly impossible by today's standards but it was do-able.

At one point my grandpa was having interactions between a medicine he was on that was supposed to help reduce pneumonia risk and an ingredient in the denture cream he was using on his partial. It was causing excessive metals in his body and causing nervous system problems and suppressed breathing is my understanding. It's been years so I might be remembering details wrong. My point is..... like seriously..... This stuff gets WAY out of hand!

I'm not suggesting that the Dr's are not doing everything they can or that there is really anything anyone can do at all.

I know if I were in your shoes for my own peace of mind I would find it worthwhile to do some looking into a few things, print them off, bounce them off of the doctors, etc. If nothing else just to take away the feeling of helplessness.

For my grandma I know keeping grandpa around meant the world to her. And it did for the rest of the family too. And I know the time she spent added several years of life for my grandpa. No the days weren't perfect, but there were a lot of good ones and it made it worth it for both of them and then some. I think that's a great outcome and I'm grateful for the additional time we had with him.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your dad and your family Trey.

    Best regards,

Trey, I feel for you and your family.
You are now on my prayer list.
I went through several years of the same frustrations.
my mother-in-law suffered with this after
a 10 month hospital stay with heart problems.

Her poor lungs cause a lot of problems. We ended up buying our own sat meter to
check it. When she had troubles most of the time it was low.
It may help you with correcting his situation.
Again, praying for you and yours.

We have watched him deteriorate over the last 4 years and have on several occasions been told to prepare for the worse as he won't last much longer only to have him prove the doctors wrong. I think at times that keeps him going as much as anything. I hope and pray that he recovers from this, but I also hope and pray that his and my Mother's quality of life improves too. Prayers and thoughts for you and you family Trey. Watching a parent go through a sickness for a long period is the worst. My Mom lost her fight back in 2000 and has been hard for me since I was so young then. Keep your Mom strong and yourself and things do seem to work out for the right reasons.

On a lighter note my oldman is a retired fighter pilot from that era as well. One cool thing is, he has a picture of his '57 T bird and his F100 on the tarmac together. The neat thing about that is they have the exact same build date and he has the build sheets framed in that picture.

Another good day Thankfully! Dad is doing better. They moved him from ICU to a regular room today. He is grumpy and irritable and wants to go home, so apparently he is back to normal!

Don't know how much longer he will stay in the hospital. I am sure insurance would like to kick him out ASAP as usual. We will know more tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your personal insights and personal stories about your loved ones. It helps to know that we are not alone, although I would prefer that none of us have to deal with these issues.

We have been reviewing and going over all of his medications and trying to determine how everything affects him and interacts with other medications. Needless to say it is very difficult and technical to say the least. Personally not something I enjoy to say the least. One thing I have suggested is for them not to make more than one change at a time so they can review how it affects him and if there are any issues or negative side effects. Hopefully that will stop some of the problems he has had in the past, but I guess we will see.

Thanks again to everyone and I will update again tomorrow after we see what kind of night he has.

    Trey,

I'm glad to come in on the part of the thread where good news, improvement and good days are what's happening. I hope this is a trend that continues! It sounds like your dad was a major factor in making you who you are today, and for that, I think a lot of folks like me will admire him by that very fact alone, then add to it his service flying some of the coolest stuff we've ever put in the air...safe to say pretty well anyone who is a decent person will be pulling for him and your family.

The fact that you all are also trying to approach everything from his treatment to other possibilities in a rational manner is incredibly valuable and will help you all through anything you wind up facing. Please continue to keep us all posted, and let your family know that a bunch of Internet strangers care and want to give support however we can.

Praying for you guys. As I get older, unfortunately, so do others. Seems like we've been through it way too much in recent years.

My grandmother passed away just over a year ago from an aortic anneurism. She lived with it for years, but it became more difficult with age. She lived an active life right up until her last few years.

The reason I bring her up is because a few years back, when she was still doing well, she seemed to develop dementia out of nowhere. We all thought it was just her time and the wonderful woman with a brilliant mind was gone. Mom and her sisters started visiting her doctor with her, who agreed she was probably suffering from age-related dementia. Somehow, they stumbled on an underlying physical illness they knew nothing about. It turned out that she had a uti. I had no idea that it could cause symptoms like that, but she was treated and back to her old self within a week!

Sorry for the long story, but I figure any ideas might be a chance to look into a possible solution. In her case, she was a private person and didn't like to discuss that sort of thing. That's why it went unnoticed by everyone.

    Thanks again everyone!

Skye, great to see you more active here again! I hope things for you have improved and continue to get better!

In regards to the UTI, that is something with my Dad's kidney function that has been a constant and reoccurring problem. My Father lost one kidney to Hodgkin Lymphoma back in '97, he went thru treatment and it went into remission. Then in 2003 it was back with a vengeance and completely surrounded his other kidney and collapsed the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. They couldn't operate because they couldn't tell cancer from good tissue. He went thru chemotherapy that almost killed him, but they were able to get it under control, but they had to install a stint into the urinary tract to allow his kidney to function. That stint has to be replaced every 6 months. In the fall of 2013 they were about a month and a half behind in replacing it and the stint became infected. Dad went septic due to the build up of toxins in his blood and ultimately had to put into a medically induced coma. That one instance alone he has never fully recovered from and due to the symptoms of that episode Mom is always quick to rush him to the ER.

As you stated Broncojunkie the Dementia like, mentally unfit, and at time just plain crazy symptoms can be a sign of a UTI or something to do with the Kidney functions, etc. Personally I would never have guessed that but we have experienced it thru Dad. Definitely something to keep an eye on and watch out for.

I was able to convince Mom to sleep at the house last night since Dad was doing better. That has helped her a ton to have a night without waiting on him and sleeping in her own bed. We will head back up to the hospital shortly to see how he is doing and what the latest is from the Doctors.

    Thanks again to everyone!

I am glad to hear he is doing somewhat better. Yeah, UTI in the elderly are unbelievable. I forgot my mom had one about 5 years ago. The crazy infection. She was utterly out of her mind for 2 days. My sister was at the hospital with her and said, she can talk on the phone but doesn't make sense. So I talked to her and she said she was in the best hotel she ever had been in. Their room service is bedside service. Then she talked about the nice man who pulled her out from the car that fell on her (MRI machine) and how my dad wouldn't pay the man for saving her life.

I had no idea that a UTI could do that. But I had just started dating a RN and when it first happened my sister said they suggested mom had a stroke as they were rushing her to the hospital. My now wife, said, I bet she has a UTI.

The best thing we did for my mom since mentally she was fine, was start her on home hospice. She had given us firm instructions that she wanted to die in peace at home and not to take her to the hospital. She was adamant about not going back to a hospital. She passed in bed at home. It was rough, but I know she was where she wanted to be and she had all her wits about her.

I think that's the best situation anyone can ask for.

Good New is Dad is doing ok. He BS'ed his way with the Doctors when Mom and I weren't there and convinced them to let him come home. Not that we don't want him home and out of the hospital for good, but once again IMHO he is coming home a bit prematurely. I can't blame the guy for not wanting to stay at the hospital, but every time for the last month that we have dealt with this, just as he is getting better (NOT completely better) he pitches such a fit about being in the hospital that they let him leave.

My issue is that his overall health is probably 50% of the average person at best on his best days. So he gets sick, goes into the hospital and his condition drops to say 30%. Well 4-5 days later he starts getting better, but still not back to his "normal" 50% , maybe say 40%. So better than his low of 25%, but not back to his previous 50%. So he comes home, doesn't do anything the doctors have told him to do, doesn't want to check his blood sugar, blood pressure, and just wants to sleep all day. Then sure enough a week or two later he will have another health crisis that drops him from 40% to 25% and the whole cycle starts over again.

I love the Man will all my heart and would do anything for him without the slightest hesitation, but I have to admit this is frustrating the hell out of me! We are quickly declining and without a major change in his behavior and attitude, I am not sure how much longer he has left. Obviously the choice is his and if he has decided that he has had enough and life on this rock isn't worth the pain and the struggle I have no right to say, feel, believe differently and I will not judge, but D#MN this is stressful. Honestly I am not sure my Mother can take much more and after today and him refusing to go to physical therapy, that just might be the last straw for her.

So Sorry for the long rant and frustration. I am happy he is doing better, I just wish it was MUCH better. I hope things continue to improve and he has more good days than bad in the future, but honestly right now I just don't see how that is going to happen.

Thanks once again to everyone for all the prayers, support, and kind words! I know they have made a HUGE difference for me and my family and I can't thank everyone enough.

    Thank you and I will!

We are dealing with blood sugar issues daily and he now apparently has some type of kidney infection. Waiting on final tests results to confirm exactly what is infected, but won't get those till Monday.

All of this while trying to repair/remodel their house is wearing me out I swear!
