I still had paint prep left after my paint job and used that on the surface before I taped the moldings down. I painted mine before I installed them but I do not have the charcoal bottom.

I always recommend and do a prep of the surface before installing any body side moldings or anything that attaches with double sided tape, new paint or old.

I would recommend using the SEM paint or another name brand trim paint to paint all the moldings. This will give them a uniform and consistent color all around the vehicle.

The other trick I have learned over the years is to use a rubber roller (I use a laminate floor roller because it works, I have it, and again it works well! ) to roll the body side moldings onto the vehicle after they have been set in place. This allows me to apply firm, steady pressure on the entire width of the molding and really press the molding into the double sided tape, and the tape into the car body. Obviously you don't want to dent or damage anything, but a nice firm pressure seems to really seat the moldings and I have had no issues with them peeling or curling over time.

I am not sure what brand of double sided tape comes on the molding, but I doubt it's 3M VHB tape. I have had very good luck using that product and do recommend it when buying new tape. 3M makes an adhesion promoter that is used for Vinyl wraps, etc. that may help to improve the adhesion of the tape, especially on the edges and corners. Its available from several sources and in several packages. Here is a quick link. Good Luck!
