    Default New Transmission

After years of fixing broken T5's (dog ring boxes), I finally saved enough to step up to something better ... it's a G101a 4 speed.

Its such a nice, Ford Super T10 style gearbox with side loader style and Top Loader strength.

The Toyo Kogyo Rotary guys find the 3rd gear set T5 and Toyo Kogyo Mazda 5 speeds, even the Supra/Getrag 6 speeds, are out of reserve strength at 350 rwhp in drifting situations.

The refurbished G101A from G-Force with Long shifter and 3/4" Mazda adapter plate comes with installed 1.923, 1.538, 1.239, 1.0 gears, and your up 4 grand for a bomb proof trans. That's pretty good.

Thats the Long HT-4000 4-Speed H-Pattern Shifter on the 19.25” set back isn't it?.

What ratios did she come with?

The others are 3.00, 1.87, 1.39, 1.00 and 24.5” from the front of trans

I always was bothered by the two prong Ch##y trans mount, but its looks like it fits real good.

Neat!Strength and ratio wise, does it compare to a Viper spec T56 from D&D ?

I ordered with 3.17/1.96/1.30/1.00 ratios. This went with me changing from a 4.30 rear gear to a 4.10. (Was 2.92 1st and 4.30 rear)

The build is what they reference as a coyote stock build with a specific set back and shifter offset to best fit in a fox body.

They "rate" this at 1,000 hp. Time will tell if I can break it in spite of that.

A T56 is not a viable option for my 4 cylinder, the gearing is just not a good fit.

Great choice. That's like the old 4 cylinder twin cam Toyota 4 speed ratios before they started putting over drives in them.

The T56 is hell for stout, but not a light or smooth shifter, and the ratios, well....both TKO and T56, bad ratios for drag racing.

First is always too tall, and second always too low.

Its the gaps, no matter how you base it. All modern transmissions, the same issue.

Same as the 6 speed ZF 6HP26 autos and Ford 6P autos or the 6 speed manuals...all circuit racers and drag racers say the same thing.

In addition, more than 4 gears, and its just a wander about in no mans land.

Now, lets compare. In a stock Ford 6P,
They have exceptionally short 1st, 2nd ans 3rd gears

It is just a German ZF Gear ZF 6HP26 six speed auto with the following ratios.
1=4.17 (in terms of the nromal 1:1 4th or 5th ratios below, 4.80)
2=2.34 (in terms of the ratios below, 2.69)
3=1.52 (in terms of the ratios below, 1.75)
4=1.14 (in terms of the ratios below, 1.31)
5=0.87 (in terms of the ratios below, 1.00)
6=0.69 (in terms of the ratios below, 0.79)

wide ratio T56 or TKO 6 Speed
1st Gear: 2.97 (in terms of the ratios above, 4.01)
2nd Gear: 2.10 (in terms of the ratios above, 2.84)
3rd Gear: 1.46 (in terms of the ratios above, 1.97)
4th Gear: 1.00 (in terms of the ratios above, 1.35)
5th Gear: 0.74 (in terms of the ratios above, 1.00)
6th Gear: 0.50 (in terms of the ratios above, 0.68 )

close ratio T56 or TKO 6 Speed
1st Gear: 2.66;(in terms of the ratios above, 3.33)
2nd Gear: 1.78;(in terms of the ratios above, 2.22)
3rd Gear: 1.30;(in terms of the ratios above, 1.63)
4th Gear: 1.00;(in terms of the ratios above, 1.25)
5th Gear: 0.80;(in terms of the ratios above, 1.00)
6th Gear: 0.63(in terms of the ratios above, 0.79 )

Wide or close ratio, you cannot make either 1 st and 2nd work on a turbo 4, or a good 5 liter drag car. The spacings are wrong, and the aftermarket never addresses it.

This stuff is right back to traditional 1962 to 1976 wide and close ratio T10's and TopLoader 4 speeds.

Ford fixed this stuff up in that 62-76 FE and early Windsor era, but after 1976, it got attenuated by traffic jam gearing with lopeing 2.47 to 2.26 axle ratios and/or 0.81 or 0.70:1 4th gears with 3.08's.

What you have is back to basics, with fairly aggressive first gears, and nice 1-2-3 ratio spreads. The BW SR4, SROD, T5, T56 in fact, all modern era gearboxes lost a lot of that simple ratio spread because of the darned LA Basin Test 75 emissions and fuel economy gearing.

Going back to the basics, the 4 speeders present less ratios with less dead weight and better spread and almost limitless adjustablity. And the return of "go ahead, blow it out your rear" pre T5 strength! Just like the old Super T10's and TopLoaders

Would have to do some math to see the ratios in play to really size up what you've built.

I really enjoy my T5Z paired with a light flywheel. 2.95:1 low and 1.94:1 2nd has suited me. I wouldn't want to put it in 10 second duty albeit the guy that builds them for me has without trouble.

Had to ask - I knew there was a lot of thought put into why you chose what you did.

    thx for sharing!

My old combo was a 2.92 helical dog ring T5 with a 4.30 rear gear. The combo worked good off the line, but would occasionally get a bit of a bog off the line in crap air ... it was out of gear on the top end, I shift at 6600 rpm and was crossing at 7400 ... not ideal

New combo I picked up a litttle more launch ratio, 3.17 first and a 4.10 gear ... so I should be able to take a touch off the two step and run to the stripe in a effective range

Well that ought to fix your transmission concerns once and for all.

I'm betting you can do it Bob!

My friend Dennis put a fancy G101A transmissions in his 650 HP Mustang the beginning of this year. The trans is supposed to be rated for 1000 HP but he's already broken it once.

Racers can and will break the unbreakable!

Hope I'm not sending any bad karma your way with this post.

I actually chatted with Dennis on the UMTR site before I ordered mine. I think part of his deal was set up related, but time will tell. I've also chatted with 3 others with a season plus on them without those issues ... main goal is to be able to run the full season between issues. If I can do that, send it back over winter for 100% inspection and repair as needed, that's about as good as you can hope to do stick racing in my opinion.

I love how it sounds like it's breaking every time you pick a gear. Face plated transmissions are wild! I'm curious how loud the gears are outside of the car.
