Default Finally got a Pace Car

Thanks to Four Eyed Pride, Marshall (Conmech) and Michelle (seller) this weekend I brought a Pace Car home. It is a factory, v8, 4 speed, cruise, rear wiper car. It does not have a door tag and I could not find the buck tag but the VIN is 9R03F482179 (it is already in the register). I plan on getting a Marti report to get all of the juicy details. I believe it has 133K on the odometer, anyways on with the pictures.

Since it was built at San Jose the buck tag is not in the same spot as Dearborn. San Jose tags are down low, behind the driver headlamp. Same as 1987+ Mustangs.

FYI the assembly plants VINs did not interleave so there were two #2179. You have San Jose #2179. There was also a Dearborn #2179.

I did not know that about the VIN's and plants...thank you for that info. I will look to see if the tag is hiding behind the headlight.

For our two San Jose 79 coupes, the build sheet was under the drivers seat. I see yours have been recovered but maybe you'll be lucky and find it elsewhere!

Is the "9" in your buck tag decode correct? It says "White and Vaquero interior trim color".

Regardless, congrats on the new car!

Trim code is at the end of the first line on 1979 San Jose buck tags. In your first buck tag pic you can see an "A" after "1EA". That is the trim code.

Ryan, glad things worked out. Pleasure meeting you and the fam. Michelle is happy the car is going to be on street duty, eventually.

I am starting my stock pile of parts as I come across them.

    So far I have found:
    NOS wiper switch
    NOS signal switch
    Re-poped Cowl plastic
Drivers glass / e-brake handle (thank you FEP)

I have to finish up my SVO before any large purchases can be made, as I am already testing the waters with the Mrs by having 2 project Mustangs in the garage.

I scored an 86" GT roller last weekend as a parts car for 100 bucks. It has a rebuilt 8.8 and a solid rust free roof, hopefully I will not get too much hate by deleting the sunroof in the Pace Car and replacing it with a solid roof.

I can't blame you for getting rid of the sunroof (I am not a fan of them!) especially if you have major rot in that area. Obviously that can cause some to want to disregard your PC as being a legitimate PC due to the lack of sunroof, but obviously you can still provide proof of it's true heritage.

As Marshall mentioned, it's your PC so do with it as you see fit or desire. I know others have done T-top conversions to replace rusty sunroofs and/or to make their PC more like the actual Pace Cars that paced the Indy 500. Best of luck with the repairs.

I know a guy here in SoCal area that can provide the parts (correct doors, t-top roof section, etc.) for ballpark $600+/- and probably can provide the name(s) of his customers that have done t-top conversions.........

Hmm, that may have to be looked into. But I maybe over my head with a t-top conversion. I would probably loose the 79-80 door handle location, unless he has 79-80 t-top doors. I bought glass for the drivers door too.

this is what happens when I think with a keyboard in my hands.

After over thinking on how to replace the glass on the pace car, I finally got off my butt and did it. It was not as bad as I thought it would be, now this was just not the glass and all I would have to do was rivet it in.......the glass I got had the mount/guide already installed so I figured I would just install the glass with that still on. Kind of a PITA but not as much as I thought it would be.
