awesome build picture of the restored 85 before the Saleen stuff goes on.

update on the motor - CNC Motorsports is 12 weeks out on a shortblock. And that’s if we use a Dart block instead of an OE.

Trying to a without final assembly timeline now.

My dad is up for building it in the garage. Dyno would wait until it’s in the car and the focus of the session would be to dial the carb and timing in using my wide band

A few progress photos at least out in the sun. A good final wash and wipe down would make it look even better at this point.

Latest on the motor - about to ink a deal with CNC Motorsports to do a Dart based block with Scat I beam and Scat forged 3.25” balanced crank. Mahle 4.155” bore. Will make for 353 CID with a piston designed to work with my inline valves.

Will work with the FTI cam I had custom made for my heads as the larger bore unshrouds the intake valve and feeds the additional cubes without severely impacting power curve. Low end torque is heavily influenced by stroke so it will behave nearly identical to the 331 design except for a 10-15% increase in power and torque numbers. Will work with everything I’ve picked to this point just fine.

Im looking for somewhere to dyno the final build in the Omaha area so we can get the advance and jetting right and safe before I transport it to Trey’s shop where we will install it and give the car its maiden voyage.

The rear disc conversion is next on the agenda as well as the Maximum Motorsports panhard rod install. Then the exhaust system and the car is a roller once again!

    Awesome !

I just realized that that I never swapped lugs with Devon’s car. He has the correct depth chrome lugs under his caps for his 10 holes .....

May not be "Correct" but IMHO, I would use the newer style splined lug nuts in black. Fit better and don't draw attention to them. Your call, but hopefully need them soon!

Dart block 353 cid stroker ordered. On its way to Omaha for assembly.

Testing it might get interesting unless all the extra BS like pan and such is sent up. Will figure out what to do...

If I remember correctly, had to drop front sway bar a bit to clear 363 Dart. Using Canton oil pan.

In some ways rough in some ways not.

There was a lot of stuff missing. The wiring was in very poor condition and a lot of stuff had to be sourced. There were some problem areas on the body but they were not the typical rust repair related things. They were the some idiot put in an aftermarket sunroof and the how many door dings can one Mustang have type problems.

Also I certainly added to it with the 85 Saleen body kit and stuff like the battle boxes and control arms, etc — all the upgrades.

The car is WAY nicer than it ever could have been if I had tried to revive it myself. For one I don’t have near the skill Trey has on some of this stuff, also there’s how impatient I can get with projects I’m working on at times.

The many days per month I am on the road with work kept me from doing anything other than research and buying parts. Honestly it simply wasn’t getting done in the next 5 years if it wasn’t for Trey. I’m thankful that he took it on.

I didn't mean it like that. I was looking through your before pics and it was a mess like most project cars. Flat black faded basically what we always find for a "good" price online. Gives me hope for mine...eventually when I can get it in the garage... Trust me mine is rougher but we do what we can.

Another thought — as neglected as it was this could be the most love this car has been shown since new.

Or maybe since it’s complete restoration to medium canyon red in the 80’s and Racecraft suspension install??

No way it’s going to be worth what I have in it, but nobody likes it when a car is rebuilt 1/2 way. And you won’t get Trey to do 1/2 way. I think the end result will be worth it even if it is so much more than the car is worth on paper. But the trick is you have to love 1985 Saleen

A lot of little stuff going on that doesn't really show up in pictures, but here are some to at least keep everyone interested.

Here is the engine bay wiring trying to be sorted out. Luckily it was completely cut up and patched, but the previous owner definitely didn't do us any favors. I really like the blue painters tape with details in pencil. They have really stood the test of time. Then anything and everything that I guess they felt they didn't need or want, they taped up with 10lbs of black electrical tape. I spent almost 2 hours removing all of it late last night and then spent another 30 minutes trying to get all the adhesive residue off my hands and fingers!

I will sort out all the wiring and then clean it up and properly splice in any repairs as needed such as both front bumper turn signal pigtails. Not sure why they cut those off!

The M/C will need a new fitting for the back port. Apparently not a direct swap for the original M/C, but not a huge deal. I will pull the line off the Proportioning valve, cut, replace the fitting, and then reflare the end.

Test fitting the new rear brake conversion calipers and brackets. Looks like everything is fitting pretty well. I need to drill new mounting holes and locating holes for the flexible hydraulic hose mounts. You might also notice the lower shock mount for the MM Panhard bar. I need to pull that back off and enlarge the mounting hole as per the instructions so I can install the control arm bolt and then move forward with the rest of the install.

Sorry about the line on the master cyl.

The M1858 is not quite right — the line issue Trey highlighted is one I had to solve on my 86GT also.

Autozone does carry a line adapter that fits for anyone that doesn’t know how to double flare lines.

The best answer — one I found after digging back through my disc conversion notes — is a 1973 Ford LTD / Torino master cyl. Those are also 1” bore, bolt right up to the Fox booster, and use the same sized lines as our Mustangs.

So my fault. I forgot about the 1973 part and went with the same master cylinder as I have on my 86GT.
