that yoke is the one I have. It doesn't accept a standard fox U joint.

That nose is very similar to the real 85 Saleen nose. Xenon actually owned the rights to it via their purchase of A&A but they threw their 85 Saleen frontend molds away. Hard to say what the origins of that nose was. It's different than the 85 or the 86 but similar.

updated wish list. New additions to parts bin include 4 spoke Momo steering wheel an adapter kit from Momo. Picture of the wheel before reconditioning attached

70006 - MOMO USA Steering Wheel Hub (84-04 All)
    Item #: 70006.

    Progress!

would be nice to have a Wolf Racing wheel instead as that's what is considered most correct on an 85...... Will keep looking.

Removed the crappy flat tires, out on glidethunder's 15x7 weld wheels. Now this roller rolls easily!

The map light for the 85 has the guitar plug for a radar detector. Couldn't resist buying a correct working 85 Escort radar detector to plug into it. Now to find or make a cord.

There are getting to be fewer and fewer things needed for this car to be correct as an 85 Saleen when its done. The big one that jumps out at me currently is the overlay decal that was put on the Tach and the decal that goes on the old (BBK) 170 MPH "Saleen" speedometer. [edit - have bought a BBK 170 MPH speedometer. also have leads on a Saleen cluster][edit - now have cluster from 1986-045 which was made into a full on race car]

Lots and lots of parts still needed just to make it a Mustang! Any and all past or future help is hugely appreciated!

So far this build has been SO much fun!

[edit - map light came from car 1986-0026. I will be merging the part into one working assembly.]

Man the car has two rarely known pieces that were on Saleens. Hard pressed for me to believe it was not a conversion done by Saleen.

I continue to wonder this myself..... Not that it matters that much but it would be nice to know the origins of the dead carcass left for scrap that I'm rebuilding.

I noticed last night that there is a faint outline of the correct Saleen window treatment. Yet another piece of the puzzle I guess.

This is going to be a fun car when its done. My biggest problem may become that I might not want to get rid of it once my 1986 GT is all rebuilt.

I guess that all depends upon how well it turns out after its all done being bolted together.

I've helped make an entire rear quarter panel for a 1968 425HP-427-4Speed Vette. Shouldn't be THAT difficult for me to figure out how to mod a one of those GM wings they hacked up to fit a Mustang on the "Big wing" cars. Na..... Just the thought reminded me of something -- its way too much work!

Customer service that makes you go hmmm.....

My order took longer than expected to get here, and when it got here it had a copy of my question on the top of the packing sheet on Saleen letter head. But no acknowledgement or answer. Fun....

I just spoke with staff at Saleen. There is no record of FF188532 as having been altered as a serialized car or having had their shop do the conversion as was done for a while back in the 80's.

Rarely have I received such news from a gal that sounded so excited to deliver less than stellar news.

Interestingly there are little known modifications present on the car were never available except on serialized cars or car modded by the Saleen shop. Lower K member brace being among them. Etc

So this car will be given the joke label. The number of the Saleen never made. 1985-006 - and just a good clone.

This one so far has proven almost as difficult as I well imagine the early ones were to build. Now if only it had a drivetrain to ignore in the build process!

Wonder if it was a dealer conversion then? Have you ordered a Marti report to find out what dealer the car came from?

I will order one as I continue to research. At this point I need to start with the last person who had their name on the title.

The person who advertised it that I bought it from was legally a dealer here in Nebraska - albeit they don't have a car lot. Only a race shop where they cut up aero foxes and shoehorn in mod motors and sell for 5x the foxes previous value with full race suspensions (from Griggs?) under them.

I mostly expected the news from Saleen. It would be good to know where and when this thing was modded.

one thing that's interesting is there is a serialized car that's only 6 digits off in the VIN and several non-serialized cars in concentration around this cars VIN.

Oh well. I am enjoying the build process on this one regardless.

What about this hot mess?? I'm sure it's not one of the few real Saleen convertibles but how about some parts?

Yea - thanks for sharing! It is a hot mess for sure! It's dealer only and being all the way out in MD it would cost far more than it's worth for me to transport it.

    observations for someone closer:
    - Looks like it has a one piece lower front bumper - a knockoff like the one Xenon made for a while I think
    - The rear spats behind the rear wheels - not sure what they are. I suspect a cut up then blended newer Saleen bumper?
    - Side trim - can't tell for sure. It might be Saleen, likely not.
    - rear wing - can't tell what it is. Likely knockoff but worth $$
    - car is lowered it appears
    - interior is mostly gone but those may be SVO seats??
    - has onion style FMS camber brackets early Saleens are known for
    - has a strut tower brace albeit a poor one
    - I see a tubular GT40 intake on the car.
    - I see a MAF meter on the car.
    - car has a racing steering wheel on it
    - car has 95 cobra wheels plastidip murdered out on it

Im sure I missed something. The car is crap but looks very save-able. Very likely this one will get bought for its parts value.

Good question! Next time I'm at storage I'm totally going to look. Resisting the urge to make a special trip... but only because I have 50 other things to do today.

I researched the dead pedal thing last night. Not all four eyed Saleens had a dead pedal. For example when you look at pictures of four eyed cars that have been for sale over the years a mix of 85's and 86's show interior pictures without a dead pedal.

Its on the build list as an original part of the serialized cars but it doesn't appear to be there consistently.

One of the attached pictures is 1985-001 and it does not have a dead pedal. Nor does 1986-25 or one other 1985-127 and 1985-0115 also do not have one.

I have also found many pictures of four eyed fox Saleens with dead pedals. One 85, many 86.
1985-065 shown here appears to have one. http://soec.org/solid-1985-hatchback...fered-on-ebay/

One of the pictures is minus it's Wolf Racing wheel and just has a basic three spoke momo. The same car minus wheel is also missing it's shifter knob..... oh Lordy now there's and expensive part to replace if you can find one!!

Another interesting one is some 85 and 86 were built with factory premium sound, most had Kenwood KRC-6000. Sony was also an option yet I've yet to find a single interior picture of a four eyed Saleen with a Sony [edit -- correction - Sanyo] head unit or speakers!

    Interesting bit of trivia.
