Damn thats a heavy trailer. My 24 foot enclosed is only 7700 gvw.
Enough about tow rigs. Back to the awesome build thread.
Highway gears for sure don't help. Gutless 5.4 - in stock form, agreed.

My 08 MarkLT is a 4 door with short-box and its within 100 lbs of your truck.

The stock tune on the 5.4L 3V, IMO, is an epic fail. Hypertech found a ton of HP and torque simply by tuning for 93 octane premium with a K&N filter. Improved mileage to boot. Also with the tune they are one hell of a lot more fun to drive.

If power were "everything" I'd have a hopped up something or other diesel. A topic for another day...... agreed -- enough on tow vehicles.

Coming along nicely. Looks great Trey. I was a few pages behind so I just saw the pictures of the silver paint under the hood etc. I just have to say I am STILL amazed after all these years at how many random holes were in the engine bay of a Fox. Has there ever been another car in history with that many unused holes? I am going to start looking at other '80s models now. Didn't it cost money to drill all those? It had to. Was there a template where whoever stamped that taped over and drilled them all? Good Grief that's a ton of random holes, LOL. I have two of them right now with the same ones. It's just WOW-in your face when you see the engine bay empty.

I completely agree the number of holes is crazy. Unfortunately I believe it was just due to the multiple engine options available over the years and all the changes the Fox went thru that caused all the different holes to be needed. I agree that it had to cost Ford $$ to drill all those holes, but I am sure it was cheaper than holding up the assembly line when it wasn't there and the line worker couldn't bolt in parts.

Luckily once you get the engine, the wiring, the coolant lines, etc. all installed the holes become less visible and not as much of an eye sore.

Well - the used WC T5 that supposedly had the stronger gear set in it — doesn’t. It’s an actual intact 1352-169 T5. Needless to say the entire gear set is going into a box and being replaced with a G-Force kit. 2.95:1 low gear, very similar ratios to T5Z for 2nd-4th.

I was concerned about the RPM on the freeway with the 3.55’s and I didn’t really want to change them so I went with a 0.59:1 overdrive. Same cruising RPM as a 0.68 with a 3.08!

    Progress!

I'm running 3.08s right now and would like to swap to 3.55s to bring my cruising revs up a bit. My engine does not like to loaf at low RPMs and that means fifth is unusable below 110 km/h (60 mph).

I still like the 3.27 gears for a standard T5 gear set. Better low end than the 3.08, but not quite the RPM at Highway speeds of a 3.55.

Obviously running the 0.59 Fifth gear makes the 3.55 more tolerable on the Interstate. I will have to see how it feels in First to know for sure. In my 79 PC I have 3.27 gears and a 93 Cobra T5 and even with a mild 5.0 I hardly ever use 1st gear. I generally take off from stop signs and lights in second without any bogging or issues.

Mine is a 355, and stock 94 engine/ t5, and it will do 2nd gear starts easy

    Honestly there is not a ton of difference between a 3.55:1 in 2nd with a 1.99:1 2nd gear (7.06) vs a 2.73:1 with a 2.95:1 low gear (8.06)

I drove an 86 with stock motor and 1352-169 T5 with 3.55:1 rear gear and later drove the same car with a 3.27:1. There was barely any difference seat of the pants between the two. The 3.27 was certainly more tolerable at 80+ in 5th. Also better on the SCCA track as the stock intake caused the motor to run out of R's on the solo track time lap straightaways.

Put my 86 with the T5Z and 2.73 and Typhoon intake on the same course and I'd have to run 1st and just bounce it off the rev limiter on the back stretch.

So in the grand scheme of things what rear gear is best depends a lot upon what the transmission ratios are and what the engine is capable of.

For a mostly stock car -- I completely agree-- a 3.27 is a great gear set for a normal T5 or even for a T5Z gear set with a 0.63:1 OD.

I went with the 0.59:1 overdrive because I suspected with a 3.55 I was going to wish I had a little better final drive ratio when I'm going down the interstate at 80+. It will likely stay out of 5th any time I'm running less than 3000 in 4th.

    Update....

Ordered the dual spring kit recommended by Flowtech for my Edelbrock heads based upon their cam design

Also ordered a Clarion single DIN head-unit that folds out and has navigation and Sirius Satellite radio and some Kicker 3 1/2" speakers for the dash.

Still more odds and ends to order from pushrods to an alarm system.

There is a long ways to go before this build is complete, but plans are firming up one things at a time at least.

    Update......

window motors that were supposedly good were garbage. bought new ones from LMR.

Had to also locate armrest hardware which was far more expensive than anyone would imagine. The armrest large clips are $10 each if you dig and $20 each i you hit up Foxresto and you need 4!!

Inner door handles were also junk so I picked up a set with new bezels etc.

Sorry No photos today, but I will get some tomorrow. Dropped off the valve springs at the Machine Shop.

Blasted the brake booster today, will get it in primer tomorrow and painted thereafter.

The Body is in final guide coat and will be blocked out and ready for final paint.

Sorry for the delays here are some pictures of the final guide coat on the Mustang. I have been dealing with my Dad and some heart pain issues the last few days so I don't have any additional photos at this time. Hopefully next week will be a bit better.

Looking great Trey! I hope your dad is ok!

For those who don’t know the story on that 8.8, it’s out of my 1986GT. It was heavily abused for many hundred thousand miles. Now it’s all blasted and reconditioned and ready for a set of 3.55’s and a lot of new parts to complete a full rebuild. That 8.8 isn’t original to my 1986, it was pulled from a totaled 1989 GT back in 1996 when the bearings in my original 8.8 failed at 150K miles and it was going to cost more to rebuild the original than to swap in another one. I gambled on the junkyard part because I really couldn’t afford either at the time and was 400 miles from home with minimal tools with me. Luck of the draw, that one held up.

it will get a 4 lug disc brake setup from Northern Racing when it goes back together.

my 86 rolls on an 8.8 out of a wrecked 95 with disc brakes. That one will eventually get blown apart and redone with 3.90 gears and Fox length axles and the same SN95 rear brakes.
