Sounds exactly like my car. I welded in a few small patches around the battery tray location and the bottom of the rad support had encountered a few curbs in it time and was bent in at the bottom necessitating replacement.

Exactly the same as my RS. Nothing really major, but will need the attention as might as well take care of it before I repaint the car.

I finally took a day to do something I wanted to rather than what I needed to do.

I cut the patch panels out of my donor car for the Capri.

First I have the T-top that I will use the rear section of the roof to repair the rust on the roof just in front of the hatch on the RS. I will save the rest of the T-top parts as backups for now.

The floor of the donor car isn't perfect and has a couple of issues that I didn't notice before since it was full of leaves and grass clips since it has been sitting for 12 -15 years. Nothing that can't be fixed, I just wish it were perfect. Still much better than what is in the Capri so still worth the work, but . . . I actually have one other Fox that might be a really good floor as a donor, but I will need to double check it and that means pulling carpet and some interior parts.

I need to finish cleaning up the donor parts and cut off the extra metal, etc. to prep them for install in the Capri and, of course cut out the bad metal in the Capri. Unfortunately not sure when I will have time to get to that, but I will try.

Hard to believe that it's been almost 3 months since I have touched the Capri.

Unfortunately with other projects I have been working on . . . 1971 Mustang, 1979 F350, and a 1985 Saleen Clone all of which are not Mine! I haven't had much time to take care of the Capri. I really want to get started on this project, but with so many others in different states of disrepair in the shop right now I don't need to add any more.

But since all work and no play makes Trey no fun to be around, I decided to at least strip out the remaining interior pieces in the Capri so maybe I can make some progress on getting the roof rust repaired and move this project forward. So after spending most of the day Saturday working on Erratic50's Saleen Clone, I decided to continue the theme of taking Foxes apart.

This is what I was left with. As you can see the interior quarter panels are toast! 20+ years of sitting in the previous owner's back field out in the Texas Sun have destroyed them. Neither of them are salvageable. So I will need some replacements. I have an extra pair black ones at the shop that can be made to work, but I will try and find some original blue ones if possible . . . Fidel are you out there!

Not much else to show at this point. There weren't any big surprises in the interior. Still a bit rusty and crusty in places, but it can be repaired! We have the technology. I pulled out the quarter class, trim, sail panels and pulled the hatch off too. The hatch is too rusted at the bottom edge to save, but I have a couple of spares, so I will just swap that out. Somehow I forgot to take any exterior pictures, so I will snap a few when I am back at the shop later today and post those up to try and spice up this thread.

Great update - glad you are getting some “me” time to work on your 82RS. That will be a neat car when it’s done.

    Thanks Guys!

It's a bit Ironic that I am normally not a stock guy for any of my cars, but I really want to keep this one as close as possible. I will make some minor changes due to costs, part availability, and safety, but overall the Capri will be restored to virtually original condition.

The poor girl needs a lot of love and attention. The previous owner even text me on Friday looking for updates. I told him I would get him progress photos and keep him in the loop as things move forward.

The game plan is to get the rusted roof section cut out and replaced with a new one and all rust cleaned up and repaired. Then I plan on adding a set of Maximum Motorsports SFC as they are mandatory on T-top cars and really every FOX IMHO, but definitely want to stiffen up the uni-body on this one. Once that is done, then I will pull the drive train, the dash, and the rear suspension out. We will cut out the floor and replace, most likely with a good used floor pan I have from another donor vehicle. I would love to use a NEW Repro floor, but this is a budget build and that just doesn't fit the budget right now.

Once the floor is repaired , then the Capri will be mounted on my Rotisserie that will allow me to completely strip the entire car from top to bottom before we start the body work. Stay tuned as things should keep slowly moving forward.

There is definitely some rust out on the inner structures on both sides. We will need to cut some metal off a donor car to replace the missing sections and shore everything up. Definitely needs some work, but not as bad as it might have been.

Thanks! We are cutting patch panels off an old Aero Mustang back half I have at the shop to repair the rust in the inner quarter panel section of the car. Once those are trimmed down and fitted we will burn all of them in and get the roof attached once again. Then it's on to the floor replacement.

I haven't actually taken the weatherstripping off just yet. We cut the rusted metal rear roof section off to expose the inner structure so we could determine what needed to be repaired. Overall in better shape than I expected based upon the exterior. Cutting down some repair patch panels for the quarter panel inner structure and then everything will be welded back up and body finished.

Once that is done, then I will strip out the weatherstripping, etc. to prepare for paint. I did remove all the weatherstripping on my 82 GT T-top, so depending on what you need help with, I might be able to provide some insight or advice.

Most of the reviews I have seen for the LMR T-top weatherstripping were NOT Good!

The Daniel Carpenter Ford Licensed weatherstripping is supposed to fit better. My plan is this kit for my RS http://www.foxresto.com/1981-83-Must...-p/1881005.htm

I am preparing the car for paint as well as replacing the weatherstrip.
If I drill out the rivets will the mouldings lift off or are they also held on by sealant?
If I knew the direction that I needed to go in I will document it and post it on YouTube when I'm done

Drill out the rivets and the top molding will come off. There might be a small amount of sealant, but basically the rivets hold it in place. Good Luck!

    Major Thread Resurrection

Ok, since I updated the Erratic50 Saleen Clone thread, my Capri was getting jealous. I actually spent a little bit of time working on the replacement hood and getting the holes drilled for the bulge scoop.

Here is the poor RS as it was went I purchased it.

Hoping to have some extra time to wrap up the roof repairs and then I will finally tackle the floor replacement.

Ok, since I updated the Erratic50 Saleen Clone thread, my Capri was getting jealous. I actually spent a little bit of time working on the replacement hood and getting the holes drilled for the bulge scoop.

Here is the poor RS as it was went I purchased it.

Here is the replacement hood and scoop. Still have some body work and paint, but already starting to look much better!

Hoping to have some extra time to wrap up the roof repairs and then I will finally tackle the floor replacement.

YES! A floor replacement, but I am not taking the easy way out like someone else . . . .

I am cutting it out of a donor car rather than just ordering new! Ok I guess a little jealousy came thru there.

Today was one of those days! I swear, I would have been better off staying in bed. Apparently my Desicant Water trap decided to die today and killed the air to the shop. So there went a couple hours diagnosing and then rerouting to get around it while I await the replacement. Then my media blasting unit designed to clog up and not want to work, so that required disassembly and a new fitting. A few other things too, but I won't bore anyone with the rest of the details.

So after all of that I decided to take a couple of hours and work on the Capri at the end of the day. The original hatch is rusted and way too gone to fix. So I have an 86 GT rear hatch that is being used. I need to weld up some of the extra holes from the larger rear spoiler, but other than drilling a pair of holes for the two side pieces of the rear spoiler, everything else matched up perfectly. The Light Regatta Blue color is actually really close to the Wedgewood Blue too which is funny. Anyway, not a major bit of work done, but it made the day a bit more tolerable.
