    Xctasy,

Thanks for the information. I already have the T5 and bellhousing, so no need for adapters, etc. I have also installed a T5 without the additional hump with no major issues, but since I have it already I will install it too. Originally I was going to keep the car as stock as possible, but with all the work that I have done and some of these parts falling into my lap as they have, I think some of this is just meant to be.

Waiting on parts and supplies for the Saleen clone, so I had a bit of time to get some work done on the RS before the rain starts AGAIN!

I started sanding both of the doors to get them ready for some primer. As I sanded, more and more paint kept coming off. I hadn't planned on taking them down to bare metal, but apparently that is what they wanted.

Both doors have the typical parking lot dents and dings. No major damage, but a decent amount of minor stuff. I will do a quick skim coat, then sand off the majority of it leaving just the dents, etc. filled and then a couple of coats of high build primer to help smooth everything out.

Both front fenders had some areas of sun damage where the paint just kept coming off, but the majority of it is stuck pretty well and no need to take it down to bare metal.

Fenders are similar to the doors with some basic dents and dings. Some road rash/sand blasting on the bottom rockers behind the wheels on both sides that will need some high build, but nothing terrible overall. You can see I had already started some basic body work. Couple of more minor dents and the fenders are ready for primer too.

Everything I have owned that I dug into went to bare metal in most areas. Normally makes for a nice cleaner end result. Real nice progress

My general rule is that if the paint is original and is stuck well, then there is no need to take it to bare metal. I don't have any issue with going to bare metal, but often the added work and supplies is not needed if you are starting with paint that is properly applied. Everything you see has been sanded well with 80 grit on a DA and you can see that any paint that is left shows very little effect from the sanding. Could I take both fenders to bare metal? Sure, but no real need there is nothing under the paint that will cause me issues and the added time it would take is something in short supply right now. Thanks!

Interesting Trey. I’ve always stripped cars completely once I’m that far. Good to know it’s not necessarily needed

While waiting for urethane and filler to dry on the dash modification for the Saleen clone, I decided to get some work done on my parts and pieces for the RS.

Decided I needed to blast the nasty control arms.

Now I need to get the SN95 ball joints installed and the new bushings, then I will put them in Epoxy primer and a nice Satin Black for the front and Silver/Grey for the rear.

If I wasn't so far along on the doors, I might seriously consider swapping them for another set of mine, but . . . The filler looks worse than it really is. Most is a very light skim coat at most. You can even see my red Sharpie marks around most of the areas that needed work. Lots of long boarding, but the doors are nice straight and level now.

I pulled the glass out of the rear hatch, sanded it down, and hit some light rust with Rust Encapsulator to seal up any possible issues. All of it was minor surface rust, but just enough that I couldn't sand it off without doing more damage that would have to be fixed.

Then I put everything in the booth to get some high build primer on everything so it can sit and cure for the next week or two before I block everything out again. You can see the red Sharpie in the picture below as I noted above.

Here is one of the doors in primer. The spot in the middle of the door that looks like an imperfection is spray out difference as I was putting in on heavier over the filler areas. If I had taken the picture sighting down the door you would see that spot and you would see how flat and true they are. Pretty happy with how everything is looking so far.

Awesome work saving this one Trey. Always liked the Capri as most people went for the Mustang back in the day. Can’t wait to see some color on it. Have you decided on a color yet? Maybe I missed it in a previous post.

Thanks! The plan is to paint the car in it's original color and stripes. Same for the interior, OEM materials and colors. The drivetrain will be mildly modified, but visually the car will be stock and original. I am ready for some color myself. Tired of rust repair and body work at this point.

Lookin' real good! I unhappily remember long board sanding and further mudding and putty-ing FAR WORSE long mid-'70's Camaro doors when apprenticing so long ago, lol! There will be color flying in no time! ... Really loved my '80 Capri, everything about it... the lacquer was faded, like happens to most neglected lacquer... the forward-facing hood scoop, pointy spoiler, of course the fenders and quarters "bumps", etc... originally an RS Turbo 4-speed, though 2.3 naturally aspirated when I got it... shortly after the 2.3 starting knocking, badly, through no abuse... matter of fact it got treated real well like I treat anything, with regular oil changes and maintenance... something just must have been bad from the get-go, a rod bearing or wrist pin... I never investigated, it was the excuse to get a V8 into it, LOL... it got a snarling 302 and automatic transplant. Surprised a number of 5.0L Mustangs and others. Always liked very much that it was different than the sea of 5.0L Mustangs running around though.

YEP! I am a HUGE Trans AM fan too and have owned about 8 different 2nd Gens over the years and repainted many of them. I will agree those are some LOOOOOONG! Doors! Hated blocking those out even more.

I am really looking forward to getting this one back on the road. Definitely more power than stock, but not my typical over the top kind of build. Just a fun, nice cruiser/local car show ride. A few tweaks and changes here and there, but nothing radical or crazy.

The funny thing, my 79 PC had the 2.3, but the Turbo was long gone when I bought the car. Obviously the first one didn't fair too well. I drove it with that little 4 banger and I have to admit it was fun and peppy. No power house by any means and was all it could do to keep up with traffic, but with the 4 speed it was fun. Then one day driving home from work on I-70 at 75 MPH was the death blow. Only about 12 minutes of Interstate, but as soon as I pulled off the highway at the next light, I could here a rod knocking and knew the time had come to swap in the 5.0.

Great progress - I better hurry up on that 353 build or you might have that Capri up and running before the 85 Saleen rolls out of your shop under its own power for the first time.

Had a little time to play with the Capri today.

Trimmed up the replacement cowl section to get it fitted for welding. Everything seems to fit pretty well. I need to pull the welder out and get everything burned in, a little body work on the seams and should be able to properly hold a hood once again!
