Well after overthinking and considering several options, I finally got the front frame rail repair taken care of. I was seriously considering cutting off most of the front clip and swapping it out with this.

Luckily I kicked my own butt and decided that was WAY OVERKILL and not really needed. Besides I should save it for the Black Magic or maybe something else.

Here is the frame rail welded in. Still need to clean up a few things, but it's solid and done for now. I will take care of the rest once it's on the rotisserie.

Then I spent the rest of the day working on the lower radiator support. I think the previous owner either thought the Capri was the General Lee or a 4x4 Truck. The poor lower support was beat and dented all to heck. I finally decided how far I wanted and needed to go to fix it, but be able to keep the original date stamps on the core support. So took a bit more time trying to straighten and flatten out the saved metal. Here the replacement piece is clamped in place. Still need to clean and prep for welding and then that's done.

I probably won't have much else to update for awhile as I need to jump back on the Saleen clone now that I have some more parts to install.

Was able to make it out to the shop to dump all the tile scraps after finishing the last area of tile in Mom and Dad's house!

Decided to work late and get some more done on the RS so I can get it out of the way for now. Welded in the lower core support section.

Now that the major repair work is done up front and I was on a roll, I decided to strip out the rest of the filthy front suspension. If the rest of the underside of the Capri was covered with the oil, grease, and filthy that the front suspension was . . . I wouldn't have a single spot of rust on the entire underside.

All that is left is the rear suspension and then I will have nothing but a really nasty looking Unibody shell!

    Thanks!

The RS is a pretty well optioned car although no PW/PL, tilt or cruise. I will be adding a tilt column to the car for my own personal benefit, but everything else will remain non power at this point. The somewhat odd option for what appears to be a Texas ordered car at this point is the Rear Defrost. A/C and the T-tops I completely understand in TX, the rear defrost . . . not a much! Or at least not back in 1982 that is. Hoping to have time this afternoon to remove the rear suspension and try to install the Capri on the Rotisserie if I can find my correct brackets, etc. Wish me luck!

Was able to get a little more than an hour or so to work on the RS tonight. Stripped out the remaining rear suspension and rear axle. Pulled up the last remaining OEM sound deadening in the hatch area.

Realized that my special brackets for mounting a Fox body to the rotisserie are no where to be found at this time, so I will have to fabricate some new ones unless by magic they show up somewhere. Maybe by the end of the weekend I can have it mounted and ready to work on.

Capri is mounted on the rotisserie finally. I was able to drill new holes for one set of mounts and then just had to fabricate another set. I also fabricated some additional supports on the inside. Nothing too wild, but just some extra strength and support for the unibody while it is one the rotisserie. Hopefully the rain will stop and I can roll it outside tomorrow.

Had just a short time to play with the Capri yesterday, so I decided to fit the T5 hump to the trans tunnel for the soon to come T5 upgrade.

The gift that keeps on GIVING!

Rolled the Capri out on the back pad to power wash it late yesterday evening. Removed the hatch and the hood. Removed the hood hinges that had not been touched as of yet only to find rust thru on the passenger side. Looks like more rust repair is in order on this RS. Sorry no pictures right now, I was racing against the sun going down.

Between the weather, the Saleen clone, my parents, and their house remodel the Capri has been waiting patiently on the rotisserie for some love and attention. So tonight while waiting for the Saleen clone interior parts to finish drying I decided to cut the Capri!

Originally I was going to replace the entire cowl panel, but after looking at it closer, I decided I would rather patch in a section than remove the whole panel. The only real damage is on the passenger side both to the hinge bolt locations and obviously a some rust thru around the fresh air intake. So I decided to do a patch where the majority of the repair will be hidden under the cowl vent panel. This gives me plenty of access to make repairs, but also saves as much of the OEM structure as possible. Since you have 3 sections of sheet metal all coming together at the pinchweld in the engine bay, I would prefer to have to remove as little of that as possible. Now I just need to make the rust repairs, Rust Encapsulate the rest, and trim down the donor panel for welding.

Great work Trey, too bad about finding more rust. While you are this far in...

Question on the 5 speed hump. Did you reclaim that or are they available to buy? I may take the T5 route on our 79 Ghia rather than try to piece together the 79 only or early SROD and manual set up.

There should be a full write up on a T5 install into an earlier SROD or auto car to help a guy like me! Hint hint.

Thanks! Hopefully that is the last surprise with this ole' gal! If I find more, I might have to light it on fire!

The hump I used was from an 87-93 4 cyl donor that I happened to have left over. You can buy them new here: https://lmr.com/item/LRS-7277A/1979-...on-Tunnel-Hump Just remember the shifter boot seat is different than the 4 spd, so you might need this setup: https://lmr.com/item/LRS-7277A-K/197...ssion-Hump-Kit

I am not sure what is unique about the 79 only SROD, but I honestly didn't look at my PC setup too closely it just got swapped for the T5!

A Writeup! Man do I have to do Everything! I will try and hit that big points here in thread, but not sure if it will be a good "Swap" how to since the Capri has been completely stripped down at this point. I will say the swap is pretty straight forward. You don't "HAVE" to do the hump, but honestly I like the way the seal fits better and have done it for all of my T5 swaps since I realized the difference.

Not on my agenda or schedule for the day, but when you find a deal like this you better act quick!

Picked this up a little over an hour away for whole lot less than the going rate on Summit Racing and others!

You can get by without the 1983 era T5 hump.

The 1981/1982 T4 used the older small clearance trans hump.

I6 3.3 liter 4 speeds in 1981 used the T5 1352 case with the old bellhousing. Fords proof of T5 fitment was the 1981 T4 3.3 used in some Cobras.

A 142 dollar MDL adaptpr normally places everything in the right spot

Since Feb I went on the hunt for junkyard T5's out of V6 mustangs and ended up getting one out of a 98 that looked pretty decent. They were cheap like $140 at the picknpull so couldn't resist. Since I had the SROD bell and the stock 10" clutch parts already I decided to get the MDL adapter plate so the V6 T5 would bolt right in with the extra input shaft length. The adapter plate fit perfectly only needing to drill a couple holes in the bell and fasten.

The extra length placed everything slightly back in the shifter hole which for some reason actually made it fit more in the center (actually better IMO). I trimmed the hole slightly to allow for a little extra clearance around the shifter cap and re-drilled some holes to use the 98 lower boot and the 1980 upper boot and it all bolted down nicely. It fits with the boot in the console great and I even had a spare manual bezel to pop in there to finish it off.

The extra length pushed the trans mount to the very back limit of the stock crossmember holes. I originally did a small modification to make it fit but ended up buying a stifflers crossmember for 79-81 for T5 and it fit perfect, with the mounting bolts landing right in the center of the crossmember adjustable holes etc. A nice piece especially for this conversion.

The C4 driveshaft was way too long so I had it shortened by 2" and balanced at a driveline shop for about $200. The rear end we already changed to an 8.8 from the 7.5 otherwise probably would only need 1.5" shorten etc.

I also lucked out and found some pedals and bought a new proper length clutch cable. I rigged up and mounted a magnetic position switch with relay to use as a clutch safety switch and spliced into the starter wiring. This was mainly because I had visions of the car going through the garage door when the kid forgot to push in the clutch on a cold high idle morning...bound to happen

Everything went together great and my son really likes the 5 speed...once he learned how to drive it..haha !!

An overall successful conversion for reasonable amount of dollars. Luckily the T5 from the picknpull was decent shape otherwise it would have added some more $$ for sure. No doubt its got some miles on it but no issues so far since May. The engine is a stock 302 so I am pretty confident it will hold up unless abused etc.

Thanks for all the input from the forum. Once again it was the helpful information I needed to have the knowledge and confidence to tackle it once i knew what to look for and what would fit.

    Cheers
