    Default 1982 Mercury Capri RS T-Top 5.0 4 speed Resurrection

    Been working on this for the past couple of weeks. Was finally able to pick it up today and get it back to my old shop. Bought this from the second owner that bought it in 1985. Parked it in 1995 and hasn't moved since. The car is rough and will need some TLC and repair work, but this is probably the most complete and original Capri I have ever bought!

    The car is a 3D Dark Blue Metallic with the Wedgewood blue interior. Original T-top car, 5.0 V8, and 4 speed and 150K miles on it.

    Here are some quick pictures. I will be cleaning the car out and checking it all over. I will update with more pictures and information as I get further into the car.

    Nice! Hopefully they didn't tear up the core support moving it around. Looks like it's been towed with flat tires more than once because the tires aren't flat, they are OFF the rims. Maybe just to mow so it might be fine. Did you make an offer on the Jag just to flip it? Those aren't hard to sell believe it or not. Can't wait to see the progress.

    Core support is not perfect, but not terrible. Doesn't look to have been towed using the core support.

    The other car is a 280Z 2+2 and no I have no desire to mess with it or flip it. Hadn't planned on buying this, but I couldn't pass it up after talking to the owner and then looking at it.

    Yeah the scoop and the leading edge of the hood were damaged by a dog chasing a rabbit. We found a couple of the broken pieces where the car had been stored, but not all of them. I have a spare scoop, so it will be replaced.

    I do too! One of my best friend's older brother in High School had the twin to this car. Same color, interior, T-tops, 5.0, and 4 speed. Always loved that Capri and when I found this I had to take a look at it!

    Unfortunately that statement is usually very true for me too!

    We cleaned out the trash and debris inside the car and the engine bay yesterday. Then we put it on the lift and drained the oil. I had great plans to try and see if we could get it to start yesterday, but I got tied up pulling an ole 1977 Crew Cab out of the yard at my old shop that I had sold. Of course that took much longer than hoped thanks to flat tires, locked up brakes, and everything else! Called it quits around 6:30 to head back to the house to watch my Aggies blow a huge lead over UCLA! I have to do some repair work around my parent's house today and then I will be getting the 72 Mustang ready for final paint that I am down here for most the rest of the week.

    Hoping to get the Capri power washed and cleaned up a bit more in the next couple of days. I will take more pictures of the Capri and post them either today or tomorrow. The car does have some significant rust in the roof at the hatch and at the quarter panel roof seam. I think I am going to cut the roof off a donor car and just replace it entirely rather than try and patch any of it. There is hole just below the quarter glass on the passenger side, the hatch is rusty, the hood is toast, and the drivers door is a total loss. That is the major stuff. The floors from underneath show the area under the rear driver seat is rotted and the front corner of the passenger footwell below the heater core too. Other than that the underside is filthy from sitting in the dirt for 22 years, but otherwise not rotted out like I was initially fearful of.

    I will try and chip away at some of this over the next couple of weeks until I finish the 72 Mach 1 and then hopefully I can commit a few days to the rust repair. After that I will have to asses the rest of the car to determine how far I have to go. I know my tendency will be to strip it down completely, but I am trying to just clean, fix, rebuild, and repair rather than a full on restoration. We'll have to wait and see how I do!

    That looks like a totally killer project!! Love the color combo and the fact that it's a T-top car too. Shame on the rust but at least it went to someone who is capable of tackling that. Look forward to seeing this come back to life!!

    Definitely a 20 or maybe 50 footer right now! Can't complain for sitting for 22 years, but still she needs some love and attention.

    Honestly if I didn't have the parts here in TX to replace the rusted sections it would have been a hard car to fix. The owner had several guys that wanted to part it out, but luckily he wanted someone who would save it and put it back together. Really good guy and although he really hated to see it go, he was happy that I want to fix it rather than strip it.

    Very nice score! I always liked that color.

    There are way too many people parting cars. Here where I am cars get scrapped and parted so fast its not even funny. I've seen some nice foxes scrapped out for no reason.. or for the wrong reasons. People looking for a fast buck.

    Nice save.

    Default floor pan patch

    Repair of front corner of the passenger footwell below the heater core.

    Had a small area rusted out badly, front lower corner of firewall/floor pan/side rocker area.
    Rebuilt and patched it inexpensively with much less work vs whole pan replace.
    Not time to replace floor pan anyway, which is otherwise solid.

    Cut out rusty metal, rust treated area.
    Rebuilt seam and corner area using Simpson Strong Tie galvanized brackets and metal patches.
    Patch plate metal was cut from spare lower door skin repair panel because it is easy to shape.
    Fastened metal with 1/4" rivets.

    HF 1/4" air rivet tool. A valuable tool for tough repair jobs like this.
    Yellow handle Wiss aviation snips;
    Tube of seam sealer;
    Sharpie, measuring tools;
    Can of cold zinc spray.
    Creative mind set.

    Repair was done 9/22/2011, took approx 8 hours after planning and material/tool staging.
    Repair is strong, solid to date. looks fine non show quality. No air or water leaks.
    The brackets are as thick or thicker than overlapped seam was.
    Did not weld since the brackets are galvanized.
    Cover inside repairs with carpet, dress under car to desired look.

    Here are some additional pictures of the crusty underside.

    The fuel tank and rear axle. I feel like I need a tenuous shot just for looking at it!
