1971 Mustang Grande 429 SCJ car. I am doing the full paint/body restoration on the car for a friend. Put a floor in it and prepped all the body. The car was put on hold due to a divorce that the owner just wrapped up. Motor and transmission are done now. I need to finish the painting and then start reassembling the car for the owner.

    No Thanks!

Years ago I completely restored a 1968 Mustang for a customer that drove the car in college up in Chicago for many years. When I was done, the only original sheet metal left was the roof, cowl, firewall, and both doors. Everything else on the car was cut out and replaced with less than great fitting aftermarket metal.

I tried to convince the owner to find a good donor body to replace his rather than do all the sheet metal repair since a 68 coupe wasn't too hard to pick up 20 years ago. The customer refused and wanted his Mustang fixed. I wish I had pictures or better yet a video of when he walked into the shop after I cut off all the rusted at the back of the car. I thought he was going to have a heart attack. I had to walk him off the ledge for almost 30 minutes. He was much happier several weeks later when he stopped back by and saw what resembled a whole car once again.

Well . . . . Since I am waiting on some parts for the Saleen Clone, I decided to spend the rest of the day on working on my Capri. The poor RS hasn't received any love or attention in several weeks or months at this point. So today was a great day to give it some hands on attention.

I finally got the donor floor pan cleaned up of all the extra parts and pieces that needed to be removed before it can be installed in the Capri. Yes, a new floor pan would be much easier, but that's $500+ that can be spent on other items. Not necessarily a budget build, but I had a good floor and with about 6 hours of extra work it's ready to be installed in the Capri.

First I had to remove all the fuel lines, brake lines, etc. from the Capri to make sure I don't cut them while swapping the floor pan out. Then I jacked the RS up and placed it on some square tubing to level out the Capri and support it while I cut out a nice chunk of rusty/crusty old metal.

Just in case anyone has forgotten the condition of the current floor pan . . . Yeah it's been awhile since that picture was posted.

Then I just tore into the floor with my portable Eastwood Plasma cutter! I give that tool 5 starts! Works great and made short work of getting most of the nasty sheet metal out of the way, so I can get to the nitty gritty of cleaning up the front subframes and the outer rocks to be ready for the clean floor pan.

Hopefully I can make some time to finish the final clean up on the Capri over the next few days and then start fitting the replacement floor. Pictures to follow once there is something more to show.

Nice progress! You’ll be all practiced up by the time we get around to doing my ratty old 86GT.

i found a rust free 86GT drag car roller out in San Jose this evening thatvthe owner only wanted 1000 for. Logistics are not on my side though.

Well, today since the weather was crummy once again, I decided it was a good day to get the floor install DONE! Besides the RS is in the way once again!

Got all the frame rails cleaned up and shot with weld thru primer.

    Name: 2019-03-10 14.03.29.jpg
Views: 260
Size: 107.8 KB

Then I got the floor set inside the car . . . An extra pair of hands would have made it much easier to be honest!

    Name: 2019-03-10 14.14.07.jpg
Views: 260
Size: 127.9 KB

Then it was time to burn it all in!

    Name: 2019-03-10 16.35.20.jpg
Views: 255
Size: 119.4 KB

Since I had the welder all set up, I decided to burn in the T-top door brace on the driver side replacement door too.

Once all of that was done, I took the Capri off the metal square tubing and set it up on blocks to weld in the Maximum Motorsports full length SFC.

Good call on the T5 IMO. Some purists might argue for the 4 speed, but given how far gone this old gal was when you started I don’t see anone chiming in!

If you go through the T5 and find you need parts ..... happy to help out. I believe there’s a box with my spare 1352-169 gearset in it at your shop right now. I don’t see me using it anytime soon. Unless all of the sudden one day I stop power shifting Mustangs. Lol. Probably better check for a pulse if that happens.

Is that a stock EFI upper and lower I see there in the picture as well? Just say no way, unless it’s ported! Explorer is probably stock looking enough as far as that goes.

Wait .... I thought you were staying with a carb on that build.

Honestly I was trying to not get out of hand on this restoration/rebuild. I am not too worried about being 100% restored/correct. As you stated this poor RS was in rough shape. I had already planned on going to a 4 bbl carb and intake, shorty headers, true dual exhaust with SS tails. I was going to stick with the 4 spd and the 7.5 as cost savings and because that is what it came with, BUT . . . .

I found the T5 for $150 with the bellhousing and couldn't pass it up. I also have a spare 8.8 that is also a 3.08, so I will rebuild it and stick that under the RS. The RS will also get 87+ spindles and brakes, the Maximum Motorsports SFC, STB, and maybe a K member brace. The interior will be restored to stock condition with new seat foam and OEM materials from SMS. So it will look stock inside and out, but be a bit more fun and exciting to drive IMHO.

When I have time, I will drop the transmission off with Earl and see what he tells me about its current condition and what it's going to cost me to rebuild. Thanks for the offer on the T5 parts, we'll see if they are needed.

As for the intake in the back of the truck, that is my scrap aluminum pile that I need to take in to cash out. I just haven't had time to make it over there yet. So no desires to use for any reason.

Yea, I agree on the scrap heap destination for those stock intakes. What were they thinking?!

New guy here. Just read this whole thread. Excited to see how this turns out since I had an 82 RS back in the day. Mine was red/red and was pretty much original except the engine. Man I miss that thing.

    Great work so far.

I’ve yet to see you do anything 1/2 way Trey. The time and effort invested in that 100% you go for is worth it in the final product, and a marvel for us to look at.

There’s no way any fix I would have done on this 82 or my 85 would have been as nice as what you have done. I guess I’m just not patient enough with the projects when I work on them.

    Thanks Guys!

Unfortunately no updates, to post just yet. I was fitting the SFCs yesterday. Started welding in the passenger side and then had the welding wire bird nest on me inside the welder. Cleared that out and tried to finish up only to have the feed switch cable short out on me. Oh well, can't complain that will be the first part I have had to replace on the Miller Vintage since we bought it back in 1998, so that's a pretty good track record. Picked up a new cable and connector today as well as some .035 wire to make things go a bit quicker. Unfortunately didn't make it out to the shop today as I still finishing up the remodel on my parent's house. Hope to make it out there tomorrow and wrap up the SFC install and then on to the front frame rail and lower radiator core support.
