My '82 is bare from the factory. Were the '83's black? Any photos of original '83's tanks?
Thanks

Bare as well....just like the 82. Pretty sure they are all bare up thru 86 (and beyond?) The black you might be thinking of is the plastic cover they added in '85 I believe.

Found two '83's, believed to be original, that are black. No plastic cover. Anyone have a pic of their low mileage 5.0 '83?
Sorry, mine is under coated. But I do have a partial cover.

I just confirmed on my cars and with a couple MCA judges....all Fox gas tanks are natural finish. Can't say if it was 83 or 84 when the black plastic lower shield was added (although it appears it was '83), but the tank itself is natural finish. This is the case on my 85, 92 and 93.
If you have two tanks from 83 that are black, chances are they were from undercoated cars?

I have never seen an OEM black fuel tank on any 79-93 Mustang or Capri. All have been unfinished metal with either the small plastic shield or the full cover.
Not sure if the full cover started in 83 or 84, but that is most likely because my affection for the Mustangs jump from 82 to 85/86!

The early tank cover was much smaller and covered only about 1/2 of the tank. 84 definately had the bigger cover. Some tanks may appear to be black if they received a generous coating of undercoating. The ASC cars received some black out treatment so they are a bad example to look at.
