I have a 1986 GT hatch that I want to replace the manual antenna for a power one. Do I have to remove the fender to do so? Is there an easier way to do this?

Yes.
Other ideas:
Put a stub antenna on and live with it
Take it off and put it inside when you park it
Remove it and run one inside the car, plug the hole in the fender.
In glass or on glass works too. GM G body was that way 1978-1987(8?)
You don't have to remove the fender, just the plastic wheel well liner.
I have one from a Lincoln waiting to go on my car. Other stuff has taken priority though. I'm expecting a fairly easy swap.

Thanks Brad, that makes the job easier for sure, my car has just over 100K miles on it
