    Default 1983 radio intsall ??

Trying to put an aftermarket 2 post style radio in place of the factory radio. The factory radio and dash bezel have mounting points of the shafts at different depths from left to right? Why in the heck did Ford do this? Doesn't make any sense.

It's almost impossible to mount the new radio from the back and have it sit flush at the face. Almost seems like the dash needs to be cut at the recessed mounting points?

Any tips from anyone that has attempted this?

You need to use hex nuts and washers on the shaft on the backside....you have to play with the spacing on those nuts per side to get it sit in there flush. Once that is accomplished and you have the right amount of shaft sticking through for the faceplate and the knobs, then you can put the outer hex nuts on to tighten it into place.

Well that does make sense, thought about that also. I don't think I can the front of stereo to sit flush with face plate then? Will look at it again tonight.

Is there some reason Ford did it that way or is it just some of that fine Ford engineering?

That I can't answer...but I have done plenty of aftermarket radios and restoration of factory units to tell you it is indeed possible to get it in there correctly. It just takes some trial and error with the hex nuts and washers on the backside of the dash mount to get it to sit in there even...with the correct amount of shaft protruding through for the faceplate and knobs.

Here is an aftermarket in the stock two-hole opening with the factory face-plate

And here is the after, with the factory unit back in place.
