    Default Explorer V8

    Hello all,
Looking for a new motor and have found several 5.0 Explorers for sale, is there any particular year that's better than the others?

    Thanks
    Tom

96-early 97 have gt40 heads. Mid97-01 have the gt40 p heads. The gt40p head engine will make a little extra power from smaller combustion chambers, but t only some headers will work with the spark plug angle. The gt40 head work with all headers as they have a standard plug. You can tell the difference by looking at the egr. If there is no pipe attached to the egr. it's a gt40 head engine. If it has an egr pipe it's a gt40p. That and The gt40p engines say gtp on the heads while the others say only GT. I would get the best quality engine you can find, nice low mileage, rather than look for a specific year.

You can also check the door tag for the specific dates the truck was produced. Also a peak near the front of the heads will have three bars or four bars on them. Three being the GT40 etc....
