Default Keeping the blue oval alive in the family

Well, our middle daughter is turning 16 at the end of August. We have been looking at vehicles for her given she will need something smaller than the wife's Ford Excursion and my F350 cc long bed 4x4 for the parallel portion of the driving test...don't think my truck will even fit in the required 25' space! Our oldest has a 08 Ford Taurus limited but will be going off to college within a day or so of when the middle daughter needs to take her driving test.

We looked at several vehicles given our budget and standards...Mustang, MKX, Mariner, Escape, Sport Trac, Jeep, etc. She had been looking every day and finally a Ford Edge popped up that might be within the budget...if dad could wager up his negotiating skills... We went and looked, and it was a little rougher than expected...as they all are. I was able to purchase the vehicle at a good price, so after all said and done will be at the top of our budget...minus dad's sweat equity...

This is a great little vehicle that received good safety ratings, has a great power plant, was clean for the most part, and just needed a little elbow grease to get it where we wanted. Oh, and then there's that blue oval on it...

So now I have upkeep on two 7.3L Powerstrokes, two 3.5L Duratecs, and one 5.0L HO...all of which are some of the best power plants Ford produced IMHO. This is of course in conjunction with all the other boats, tractor, trailers, etc.

Congrats on the addition! I did the same when the oldest boy was turning driving age. I was specific that it needed to be a Ford, since I am most comfortable working on them. We ended up with a '07 Focus and besides fixing some stupid PO stuff on it, the little car has been fairly trouble free. The youngest boy turns 15 here in a couple days, so the hunt is on for another Ford product for him.

That should be a good, safe first car. I wouldn't worry about the paint condition too much though. With a 16 year old trying to find where that front bumper ends and the next car begins from way back in the driver's seat (must be 7-8 feet from the bumper edge to the seat!), it will get tested plenty, LOL. Congratulations!

I have loved the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles I've grown up around in my family and have driven my whole life.

here are just a few highlights:
    1974 Galaxie 500. Fuelie head, 360 offy, 351W. 120K when sold, ran high 13's
    1978 F150 Supercab 4x4 - 400M, 4 speed, 3.73's. Pulled gooseneck trailers for 400K
2 1979 Broncos - 400M. One ran propane for 200K then another 150 before crashed. Both campers with a 17' boat behind many times
1977 Chatue 3/4 ton van. 460/C6/3.73's. Pull or pass anything but a gas pump. Parked at 270K, became engine donor for project truck
1978 Econoline - 300 I6, 3 on the tree. Construction. Weighed 7800 with tools, towed a 5000 lb trailer many times. Abused for 245K before trans died
1980 Mercury Monarch - I6/C4. 120K when sold, zero problems ever
1983 Clubwagon van. 300 I6/AOD. Piston broke at 200K+. Huge disappointment as it was pampered
    1986 Tempo. 2.3L I4, 5 speed. 120K when sold, zero trouble
1987 F150 4x4. I6/4 speed 3.73's. 280K when sold. Farm truck. Towed livestock trailer and 26' campers its whole life. Awesome.
1989 Crownvic wagon. 5.0/AOD. Sold at 150K, zero trouble
1990 Tempo. 2.3L I4, 5 speed. 160K when old, zero trouble. AC still worked!
1995 Explorer Sport. 4.0 5 speed AWD. Loved that truck. Sold at 100K, clutch at 90
2000 Aspire. Who knows... was reliable but sucked to drive. sold
2001 Windstar SEL - 3.8L. Very reliable except intake. totaled at 140K
2002 Windstar SE - 3.8L. Very reliable except power door troubles. Sold at 100K
    2006 Mercury Mountaineer. 4.6/6 speed/AWD. My dad's current ride. 72K. Awesome
2008 Mercury Mountaineer. 4.6/6speed/AWD. Bought new. My previous ride. Plugs and coils. Learned about AOD maintenance. Sold at 160K+
2008 Lincoln Mark LT. 5.4/AOD. Hypertech + KN. 405 lbs torque! Pulls my boat FAST! Added factory NAV and Sync myself. awesome truck. 93K so far
2016 Lincoln MKX. 3.7/AOD/AWD. Bought new, Totally loaded out. Nicest I've ever owned.

    Cant forget the Mustangs
1989 Mustang LX sport ragtop - 5.0/AOD. Sold at 120K. Trans rebuilt at 100. Stay out of OD in town!!
1986 Mustang GT. 5.0/5 speed. Over 455K and counting. Countless parts, beat hard. Was my daily for 18 years!!
1986 Mustang GT ragtop. 5.0/5 speed. 110K. My sons daily. Neglected by PO. Fixed usual stuff, been a great car.

I've worked on and driven and been around a lot of other stuff. Am a big fan of FMC!

Thanks guys, homer302, the exterior paint is actually not bad...though it does have a whiskey dent or two... I did have to do something with the fading black window pillars, but it turned out nice. Our oldest didn't really have any issues relative to uh oh's with her car, and I don't see any big ones with this one either, given our kiddos pay for half the vehicle and have a vested interest to take care of it...but we shall see. Isn't that saying supposed to be "Rubbin is Racin"......good movie...

I tried to convince our oldest on a Lincoln Navigator as the Ford Edge's were just out of our budget a couple years back. She would have nothing of it given there was not a blue oval Ford emblem on it...even when I tried to explain it was the same vehicle and actually had all the bells and whistles...

Lincoln Aviator is still one of my favorites.

2006+ Mountaineers got the Lincoln spring/shock setup after the Aviator was cancelled in 05. Very nice. A buddy of mine has an Audi SUV.... after riding in it, he can keep it. The Mountaineers are 5x the vehicle imo. To each their own.

erratic50, that's part of the reason we were looking at the Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, as it seems they were early with the features that Ford would later introduce. I found a really nice MKX (the wife actually perked interest) but it was just too blingy IMHO for a first car. Ford made a bunch of changes in their lineup in 2007 and 2008 which made it tough for the budget. I will say, that little 3.5L with 265 ponies has some real gitty up and go!

Nice policy! That was the policy at our household as well. Seems like it is better cared for if someone has their own equity invested. Nice!

Our policy has more or less been find what you can afford and pay for your own.

And my son's 86GT was clearly the absolute nicest car in the lot at high school. There were a few SUVs and trucks owned by teachers and administration that are certainly more modern and feature rich, etc. But for cars it is hard to beat a leather interior foxbody with a nice paint job. Guaranteed it was by far the quickest and the fastest too so that always helps.

As schools go there is always that one kid with [fill in the blank] that had every go fast sticker ever made that thinks he has something for an old 5.0L. Always entertaining to see how many bus lengths the ol 86's can pull 0-speed limit on that type of knucklehead.

So many parents get their kid a mccar solely by color and price. Never mind stuff like safety or reliability or endurance.

We all know our beloved foxes have their shortcomings with things like brakes but with a strut tower brace and subframe connectors they do hold up remarkably well in the passenger compartment in the event of a crash.

At college it will be a different story for sure. Plenty of kids with parents who have lots of money come to town and show up on campus with cars guys who make six figures struggle to afford.

But the mystery for me is going to be what my daughter will decide she wants. 1980 Ford Escort wagon or 1985 Topaz with a diesel and a 5-speed, right. It's not that she doesn't have the genes to be a great driver, but she doesn't pay attention 3/4 of the time.

This may sound cruel but it's way less dangerous than a crash -- I think I'll get her on a tour of a hard hat area sometime that has nails in boards all over the place. Puncture wounds do wonders for the ol attention span in the watch where you are going category as I can attest to from having one or two get my attention over the years!

Yup! Been on the receiving end of that a few times as a kid and it's never pleasant. I'm now extremely aware of my surroundings and have avoided a lot of bad incidents because of it.

Congrats on the new to your daughter Edge!

My wife has a 2015 Edge, and although she doesn't like it as much as her ole' Navigator its been a good vehicle and much better fuel mileage.

I too was considering an Edge for my 19 year old as a newer vehicle for her to take to college so she could make it up and over the Rockies in the winter without major hear palpitations for her or her parents! So had to be AWD and preferably one that she didn't have to actually think about putting into AWD!

Ending up picking up a 2008 Mercury Mariner V6 AWD down in San Antonio while I was working around Austin. Got a better deal on it than I could back here in CO and it had all the bells and whistles and saved me at least $2K over one local if not close to $3K. She will be driving it off to college on the 12th of this month and hopefully it works out well for her until she finishes school and buy her own!

Fun write-up. Brings back memories of the first cars for my daughters, purchased shortly after they turned 16. Their instructions were: Find something you like for about x dollars, 1-3 years old, has to be a Ford product.

Daughter #1 (now age 32) ended up with a loaded two year old 2000 Focus ZTS. After taking care of a few recalls, it has been good. Mother in law ended up with it several years later... it's a hand me up! Actually she still has it, but has stopped driving so she will be selling it.

Daughter #2 (now age 22) ended up with a two year old 2009 Escape XLT. Good vehicle, she still has it. Its squarish style means there is enough space for a college kid to haul a few things.

We had a loaded 2007 MKX, really liked it. Your Edge looks to be a base model, which is fine for a teenager.

    Good luck.

The Ford Edge is a great car. I purchased a 2013 Lincoln MKX, which is an upgraded Edge a few months back and couldn't be happier with it. Good luck with the car and it is a solid choice for a first time driver.

We match what they can pay. After that, they pay for fuel (except when dad wants to drive it a little), maintenance (dad does the actual work), and insurance. Next car is on them.

We tell our daughters no cell phone usage while driving...period! They have been in the truck with me and seen teens blow stop signs because they were texting and not paying attention. I look at them and tell them if I ever see them on the phone while driving, the car will sit in the driveway for a period. Our oldest was actually rear ended by a teen who was on the phone texting and not paying attention...she was stopped in traffic and watched it happen. This is one of the big reasons they drive the vehicles they do...they are on the heavy end of vehicles today and have lots of air bags. We also get them to watch videos occasionally of various circumstances relative to vehicle safety. I just this week showed them a really good video of what can happen if you don't wear your safety belt...but I also require them to keep a box cutter in case they need to cut themselves out of that belt if it gets stuck and are in a bad situation. Here is a link to the recent one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRH5...ature=youtu.be

Thanks, we looked at several of those and she was really focused on them. After some research, I saw where the power plants started getting more refined (more power and reliability) after 2008...so this is what we were targeting. Down here 2wd is best and I didn't want all the upkeep of the AWD...plus the better fuel economy. We got a heck of a deal on the Edge and I told her she might consider selling it next summer to make a little money on it and buy a Mustang...we shall see...

Bob, I found her a really nice 2008 MKX but we felt it was too much vehicle for a first car...she is a basic individual, though she does like speed as she is a hurdler. Hope all is well my friend...

Very cool...and based on the pic of little sis it appears you'll be in the market for another blue oval in what, about 8-9yrs? I love my 7.3L powerstroke and course my five-point-ohs I wouldn't say I love my MKX, but it is a great DD, and of course Ford powered.

Congrats! Looks nice and should be safe. Our oldest boy has been driving his car since Dec and brother will be there in about 2 yrs, so I'm a little behind you.

Oh I don't dislike anything about it really, I just don't LOVE it. Its just a DD for me...a darn good one at that. I'd rather drive a fox daily but that just isn't practical I got rid of a 2010 Hyundai Sonata that was getting 33mpg for the MKX which gets about 21...so that would be the only negative. I wanted an SUV as I was tired of climbing (low) into a car every day.
